Sports?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone here play sports? I enjoy them quite so, I play basketball and baseball. Its kind of weird to be a complete nerd at home and then a complete jock somewhere else, like school persay. I'm not ashamed of being a nerd, I guess I just never got the opportunity to express my nerdiest anywhere really.

I'm actually not that bad at them really. I'm "good".

So do any of you play sports or have in the past?

I'm probably similar to you eco but I'm not sure I label myself a nerd. I mean, I guess people label me a nerd because I make websites as a job and all my friends now that. But I don't really do anything else. I do enjoy making websites...

I don't have time to play sports these days and not really the opportunity to do so either. I used to play rugby, loved playing touch rugby, and represented my highschool in handball (the serious, European sport, not the childs game) and rock climbing. I also competed in the semi-national athletics competition (nz has a north and south island so i comepeted against everyone in the south island in my age group, which is like the 4th of 5 possible stages) for long-jump, and also my relay team qualified for the 4x100m relay in my final year of highschool for that same semi-national competition. I make websites and run fast. Boom.

Now I'm studying and working all damn day and miss being fit so much :/ but thats life. Pretty shit once you get older.

'nerd' vs 'geek'

Well, the terms 'nerd' and 'geek' are often used interchangeably, even by myself. The problem is nerd only means one thing, and geek has three meanings with one mixing into the meaning of nerd. The thing is we are all geeks, and not automatically nerds, but it's possible and probably even likely.

Nerd-An unstylish, unattactice, or socially inept person; especially: one slavishly devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits

Geek(2)(Nerd like definition)-a person often of an intellectual bent who is disliked

Geek(3)(Our intended use)-an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity

So einstein was a nerd and a geek, but Mario Endretti is only a geek.

I am definitely not a sports ner...er geek, but I love recreational sports. A game of baseball or American football is always fun. Even ultimate Frisbee or volley ball when on the beach.

Agreed. Eventually you'll have enough to show for your hard work that it'll be worth it, at leas that's the theory, heh.

Well played. My uncle actually was drafted into the MLB but he decided to go to college first. He's a big inspiration in my passion for baseball.

@eco: I don't think that's a weird concept; I think it's nice to be well rounded.

I'm not much of a sports guy myself. Once upon a time, I played baseball, basketball, soccer and took up martial arts (Tae Kwon Do, to be specific), but I never retained interest.

I don't dislike outdoor/physical activities, I just really have little interest in organized/team sports. If anything, I guess I'd be a nature guy (if you took away my computer and other nerdy, or perhaps to be nice to myself (as Jon put it) geeky stuff lol); I love hiking, camping, etc.

I've done small amounts of rock climbing (all indoor) and that was quite enjoyable.

Mostly though, [what bob said].

I make websites and run fast. Boom.

Some one had to do it. ;)

It's neat to see what others here like to do outside of this place!

Wow haha, never expected that from you. Your just a mixed bag of tricks. I also do shot put.

I was never good at shotput. I was ok at discuss. But long jump and every running distance I was.

I started the forum and all but I think its a coincidence its made it this far and that I stuck with it. I still maintain I'm not a computer person, and I learned to build websites entirely for building this one.

If you had the skills to work at home, do your own hours, and have a decent amount of say in the business operations then you'd do that as opposed to an unfulfilling laborer job. I probably wouldn't get the same wage either.

Since the end of my athletics days, I do a wee bit of weights but 2011 was a but mucky for me. Its not an excuse but early on the quake came which produced a lot of M5 earthquakes (strangely most in the evenings) and I was always afraid of dropping the bar onto myself, or overreacting (you never the know the size till your shaking) and dropping the bar on myself, when I did bench press (which is alone in my room away from anyone else, don't have a spotter). I also screwed up my back in '11 getting a wee bit too into curls one night.

I also gotta do weights to keep warm in my room (a sleepout) anyways. Winter is coming.
