Chao Land teaser thread

Recommended Posts

This is a bit of a teaser/development tracker for a project that I'm working on with a friend. It's a fantasy RPG starring Chao, the AI pet from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. I just feel I'm not ready for a project page until the release of alpha version 0.01. Developed in Construct 2 r90.

First up are some sprites. Some are in the game at this point in development, or aren't even implemented in-game at all. They may change in the future, graphic wise.

FirstEyecandySpritesheet.png

1. Chao statues, 2. Pause button and toggle menu/close current menu buttons, 3: Rust mote (enemy), 4. Potions (empty, HP, MP, both), 5. Test object (currently for testing, will likely serve the function that Chrono Trigger's tab items did), 6. Normal tree growth cycle, 7. Stone brick, floating platforms (gold and silver with rune markings), and a spike hazard

The following are some screenshots. These are taken from the current version in development, which is alpha version 0.01. They are very likely to change, however.

Login screen v.3

First HUD menu

New Chao (using the BR palette) color scheme

Stat menu 1 (finished)

Stat menu 2 (finished)

Finally, last but not least is some lineart concept art that's quite new. This is my first attempt at drawing concept art, so the style is likely to change. Suggestions on improving are welcome, and very much appreciated.

Giant's Maw (a network of caves in a circular ravine)

Shroom Gardens

Felink Wraith (concept and design by Inf3rnal)

Felink Reaper (concept and design by Inf3rnal)

Wow! This looks pretty good + original. Awesome.

Thank you! We're getting very close to our first alpha release, which will probably be in a few days if I hustle and work my ass off.

I'm not really sure if I read a real project topic to this. Is it online? Or is it like a Chao life simulation? Either way, this is real cool.

It's a singleplayer/offline RPG, where the main sentient race are Chao from the Sonic games.

Crap, fail. I skipped over that part when I first read it but read it again, I feel stupid. I have high hopes for this game! So, does the game have a battle system, I'm really interested!

It's being worked on from scratch since we switched engines, but a battle system is set to be added after the first alpha release, mainly after some bug fixing.

Awesome! I see this was switched to Construct 2, great program by the way. Would you say it was easy to create this sort of game with Construct 2? Despite the tedious fact of making the graphics.

Quite easy aside from the occasional tough problem (logic or design wise, such as how to handle a feature eventing wise but sometimes a bug), and I'm actually quite talented with graphics. Not superman level htough, but I do have definite skill. I definitely think Construct 2 is capable of something like this, but you gotta put effort into it.

:) Good. Did the program have a learning curve? And what license did you purchase, or free?

Very little learning curve, it was quite easy to learn after a little bit from the get-go. Me and the other developer have standard licenses.

Ah, well that's always good. Since you own a standard license, were you planning releasing it commercially, or on the Chrome App Store?

Not commercially. Even if SonicTeam/Sega doesn't care much about fan-projects, we be in hot water if we did. We're going to host releases on ours forums, on it's own page and such.

Bumping for a good reason! New sprites! Also probably the last before the release of alpha version 0.01.

Newsprites.png

Left: Normal seed, mana seed, strong seed, reworked tree sprites (including new mana and strong tree sprites), normal fruit, mana fruit, and strong fruit.

Right: Chaos shards (yellow=swim, green=run, purple=fly, red=power), and the following small animals: penguin, boar, parrot, and gorilla.
