OUYA: Future Game Console for free games. Kickstarter at 3.5mil already.

Recommended Posts

This kick starter campaign launched today and is already at 3.5 million as of this posts last edit of their desired 950 000 desired money to raise. That's right day one and they are almost double the funding they wanted for a 29 day funding campaign.

The game console offers such features as

  • $99 to back them and have it mailed to you, +$20 for outside US
  • Every console is a game playing machine and a developers kit
  • Every game on the system has some form of free component to it to some degree
  • The entire console is open source, from top to bottom, they even give out the specs for free to build one.
  • It's already being launched with titles like Minecraft, Madden football, and many others.
  • They are in talks with other game devs such as 'thatgamecompany' and others.
  • Need I say more?

Check their kickstarter campaign out, read the whole message, and watch the video.

I will definitely be developing for this console, I backed it at the $99 tier.

Update 1:

Here is an interview with the women who founded the console.

Update 2:

Reached 2mil, and we got this official update.

"Do you realize what you've done? You proved consoles aren't dead. You shocked the world. And us!

We are blown away by your support. With your help, we just raised $2 million. And it’s only the first day.

Now we want to blow you away. The biggest thing for us right now: we are working on our stretch goals, what we can do if we raise more money. It might take us a few days to figure that out, and we want your help.

Tell us what you would like the stretch goals to be at ideas@ouya.tv.

And, if you want to vote on what games you want to see on OUYA... tell us here... https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ouya

Thank you for welcoming us. We won’t let you down.

Julie"

So this console is a F2P platform, and then you are given the option to buy the full game in pieces, like DLC? On one hand this is what most games release today should've been considering much of the 60 dollar game is cut into pieces and you are only getting the first third of the full game. On the other hand games on the platform will likely be glorified 90 minute demos and if you want the intended product that will keep you busy for at least 10 hours you'll easily end up paying way over $60 for the game. So I am guessing this doesn't really change things for the best. $99 is very cheap for a games console, but I must be missing some kind of a catch. I don't know, I am quite skeptical. Will this console scream of interactive, annoying advertisements? Will the online infrastructure be some paid to play service like Xbox Live (which is nothing better than some crappy fanboy-backed consumer gouging tactic)?

But like I said before, this is something that most 60 dollar games on the market should have been to begin with, given the DLC that plague most of them.

You are missing the point.

There are many methods to the whole 'free' or 'pay'. Picture this model for instance, you play a game for free and there is a tiny scroll ad along the bottom, you pay $1-10 for the game and the advertising disappears.

It's not just the whole 'micro-payment' subscription stuff, that's small thinking from the past. Imagine a complete game and you only pay to remove ads, or have additional content that is not game breaking or necessary, aesthetic.

Besides all that, the point of this system is to allow anyone the ability to make 'classic' style games, more powerful than a cell phone, and on a television, and available to thousands of people through their network.

Plus the thing is open source. Put it this way, I was years away from being able to develop a game with custom peripherals designed by me for it, now that's a reality. Now I can develop for a console without paying tons of cash, now I and other indie developers can do things they never dreamed of with a fraction of the budget it would normally take.

This won't play or make 'the next modern warfare' that's not it's purpose. It's for indie developers and classic gamers who want to play these types of games. And apparently $3.5 million can't exactly be a 'bad sign' of peoples interest in what they propose on day 2 of 30 day funding.

As far as trusting them, I have spent more money on worse things, this holds big things for the video game world, and I have more than happy to have backed it. If they wanted 950k, and had this big of a dream for gamers, I shudder to think what they will do with x4 or more.
