yoh just got one thing to say 'bout this epic background

 

no offense but

It does not match the sites template

It makes it looks like I'm in an MMORPG site and a form just appeared on the site

On the contrary, I rather like it. I think that is suits the point of a game developing website, and is really easy on the eyes without being too distracting due to it's mostly grey, white and black colour scheme. Perhaps, however, Marked should recolour the chain and the red colours to match the green of the GDU theme? I think that'd be pretty awesome.

No offense taken, obviously I didn't make it :P And its always great to get feedback. This image literally appeared on my computer one day, it came with some other files I was downloading and you know how sometimes people pack .zip's with things to make the filesize larger. I thought it looked cool so I Was trying it out.

 

I've got this parallax scrolling thing happening with the background so you can see its not fixed, but you also never see the bottom. What I need is a really tall background and that effect will look really good.

 

Anyways I have a poll up in your post for feedback. I will certainly change once I can find something that looks better.

I LOVE the background and changing the chains to green is a nice touch. Fells like God of War. And for some reason, the site feels more..."open". Like it feels like there's more room. Dunno if I'm explaining right. But I love it. ;)

I really don't think that it fits the site at all,I'd think that something along the lines of a wire-frame mesh fading into a textured mesh. I think that might fit much better. Marked if you're interested I may be able to put together something along those lines, just have to PM me with a request and I'll get started on it as soon as I can.

Thanks for the offer but nah... I'm afraid I may be a bit too fussy and I'm still playing around with layout designs. Not that I'm saying you're not good enough, coz I got no idea regarding your skill. I've an idea of what I do want for the background but its not an easy task to request because the image has to be above 1600px wide and larger than 1200 high.

Out of all the rpg maker sites I've been to, yours is the only one that has that profesional gaming look to it and the fact that this half of what your trying to do is already great. keep up the good work with the site.

Thanks bigace. I'd say half is a bit too high, more like 20-30%. Things just take so long sometimes and I've had my hands tied with work these past weeks. Layout design doesn't take too long so long as you know what you want it to look like. I could whip up several concepts in a day but honestly I hate designing :P I'm playing around with stuff while developing new sections.

 

I've got a new background in (you may need to refresh). It looks like a photo but it's not. Still on the hunt for the right background. The parallax effect is a bit more noticeable with this one.

I like this new background, I do like the idea of having a choice of background though, it would be nice to be able to set that in the profile, possibly with a thumbnail of what the background would look like.

 

@Marked If you can just give me an idea of what you'd want I can do it as 3D models and render it out at any resolution, since the render would just be a 2D image it would be easy to work with it in Photoshop or Gimp. Though I like the new background a lot better than the old one.

If you'd like though I'd be happy to do a render of something to effect of the fading from wire-frame to textured 3D, just to show what I had thought would fit. Since the background doesn't actually effect how the site loads though I don't think that it's much of a priority.

I'm just messing around with stuff. I've gone off the idea of an enormous illustrated background. I had wanted to go simple and web app like without becoming too plain. I'm still playing around with layout ideas, and I probably will be for a while

What I'm doing is looking for a default design. We will eventually be able to tweak a whole bunch of different layout elements, such as the background, typograpgy and colours. It's "Your GDU" :) I'm also planning a bunch of design variations so its more than changing colours and images, which is simple. I'm thinking of a bunch of different menu styles which will allow you to choose from a selection which actually changes the css, javascript and html.

I understood that, don't need to point out the obvious, but there was a image in the background and thats what I thought he was working on, then he removed it. Practically Marked already explained the point to you so I won't go into detail on my confusion I had at first.

Yeah. I liked it at first. The reasons for it was that it doesn't quite fit with what I want to go for, I didn't want the place to look like a hobby website. It also required a huge image (meaning pages take longer to load, at least before caching) to stretch the width of large screens as well as use a parallax scroll, which gave me tons of problems because I couldn't get it to scroll the correct amount so I couldn't get the effect quite right. With an illustration I guess you get some people who like them and some who don't, its not as neutral as a pattern.

 

I may use them as preset backgrounds in the customization settings. But that may some time away as I really gotta start making some content sections :)
