Why lack of forum awards?

Recommended Posts

I know here is a MOTY for 2012 but why are there awards besides that?

Most forums I know hold awards for other things too. If GDU wants to be more competive with the more mainstream forums, some forum awards would be a good start and a great encentive for both veteran, new members, and diehard daily members.

Awards for what, sitting around? To have awards you need competitions, to have competitions you need competitors, and we don't have either.

It is to bring all those 60 or 70 guest I see here all the time to become actual members. and to raise the spirits of the forum from a little club style forum to an elite status! (trumpets play!)

Well I don't mind, but it might lack applicants, and it needs to have credibility and quality too.

I don't think that's what we need to be competitive. Somewhere along the way a culture of non-contribution developed here, I've seen members here who have posted things at other forums but decided not to post the same thing here. The most disheartening for me to see is the lack of replies to the games section. We're all about making games, and we need things like good support, feedback, resources, tutorials, etc. Not so much competitions. Not that we don't need competitions, I just think we need them for other reasons :)

Saltome is right about why. Although I would say not enough competitors rather than none at all. The stats for our visitors has remained pretty strong. I think if there was a proper competition held then participants would come. You also get that member who signed up just join the contest. If we held a contest officially, managed it properly and advertised it around the site, then I think it work.

I like the idea of a contests manager who organizes the contests, keeps people interested on the forums and on our social media accounts, etc.

I approve of using awards in signatures because:

  • it looks cool
  • it inspires others
  • it works likes achievements/trophy's for xbox/ps3
  • we don't contests for this, just say polls at periodic times on various topics with people who fit the criteria
  • Imagine if, say their were the Fighters Graphic Guild that consisted of members whose talents were in the visual side and a Thieves Mappers Guild for mapping inclined people and then temporary badges that the winner would have until the next poll so that only 1 from each 'guild' would have it. I think it would be a good and simple catalyst for us.

...not to mention I've always wanted one though I'm not active on forums that have the system lol

I've notice that most RM users are wierd, they act like they want to join in but then disappear. Compittions here are like me trying to find mappers. Out of the 20 people that might join, only like 2 will submit something. I have no clue whats going on but over the recent years most people are as enthused as they used to be. Maybe it's time to branch out to other game engine besides RM, specially since there's ton out there thats has better performance with some being free.

I agree with Broken Messiah, awards in signtures do look cool. Giving them out to loyal members when the reach the requirement would be cool.

That's been at the top of the mission statement for quite a while. Of course not much has been done towards this goal. It's extremely difficult. Believe it or not GDU is changing literally every day (currently on a break from uni). Right now I'm building the framework for the future. For example, if anyone had read my latest announcement closely you will find the link to my latest creation which I will announce soon. It can be expanded into more engines without the need for me to be around, so any staff member. I think that is what I'll be doing until the end of my admin days here, so really such an expansion isn't going to be done by me. I'm building things up the best I can and my hopes are to attract more members through the site and subsequently more potential staff members who will lead the way in expansion from RM. So eventually, we will get staff members who are experts in other such engines and have a more complicated staff hierarchy.

Enterbrain.

Sounds good to me, I'm just going to finish up my three games and branch off onto other engines as Enterbrain obviously only cares about business and not its customers, which is common with most companies (Nexon comes to mind).

I never knew you need a mapper?

Ace right?

Uh no, RMXP where'd you get ACE from. Where are most of my scripts on? I'm building these scripts so when I start finishing up my demo I'll be a better scripter. RMVXACE maps come later, plus that game on ace is a remake so the maps are easy.
