MEGA launched today: New megaupload site

Recommended Posts

Today the site that replaces megaupload.com has gone live. The original domain name was going to be me.ga, but that country disabled the domain under pressure from the US.

Of course the US would love to shut down the New Zealand domain (.co.nz), but the New Zealand government won't give into the pressure from the US because they would have to publicly justify it, and the government is already getting its ass kicked by MEGA founder Kim Dotcom who was treated appallingly by the FBI and New Zealand's (currently) US-loving executive (I mean that in a negative way to the US administration, obviously).

For those who don't know, Hollywood (the guys with the large cash-flow to the US government, more) are trying to set an example with Kim Dotcom and his alleged pirating of copyrighted materials, and that's why megaupload got shut down. They're trying to extradite him and lock him up, such is the US justice system which allows taking people's liberties for victimless crimes or crimes with little moral stigma (Hollywood's profits have never been higher). Or in this case, no crime at all. Aaron Swartz would agree. Or I should say, would have agreed.

Kim Dotcom is currently kicking everyone's ass who is trying to lock him up: Both the US and New Zealand's governments who are willing to obliterate the liberties that all citizens are due.

So, support MEGA.co.nz and support internet freedom. Mega is packed with awesome features/newest browser technologies, most notably data encryption as your files are uploading. So take a look and give it a test run.

OMG I had no idea Aaron had died....this is a huge loss for the world, not just the internet.

the MEGA site looks pretty awesome. The fact that they use a 2kb privacy key is amazing....and kind of insane. what kind of computer would be needed to break a 2kb code is crazy.

I must say that I think this will be great for our community, having a file share site that doesn't have a 2 Mb limit will help with us getting our games/scripts/resources out more easily.

Yup, big loss. Such an unnecessary death. 35 years for intent, he didn't actually complete the act and was facing that. Ridiculous.

This is what Kim Dotcom tweeted toady:

Fun fact: A single #Mega rack has more bandwidth available than the entire country of New Zealand.

Pretty cool. I'm hoping they release their API so I can use the mega site for uploads/downloads via GDU. When you say 2MB you mean topic posts? In the tutorials section you don't actually have a limit, and similarly for the scripts section which I will make. I also made the manager to replace attachments, which has a 10mb limit. That 2MB limit has to do with the forum topics are temporary concept. But the reason I didn't make a games section is because on our current server we wouldn't be able to hold all that bandwidth, and we burn a lot as is. If we could utilize mega, that would be awesome.

I'm happy about this.

Ever since the US wanted to implement SOPA and PIPA they wanted to do more stuff. The people with power in the real world don't have that power in the Internet.

I love what we can say. You know free speech.

I'll support MEGA and the founder Kim Dotcom.

You screw MEGA you Screw with the Internet. Screw the industries that only wants your money.

Edit had to take out the F word I don't want any warning posts. Sorry!

You see, they (the O-bummer administration) picked the wrong guy to torture. He just built an upload site; He didn't control WHAT was uploaded to the site. I must say, copyright infringement inflates the costs to other people, because of the greed. This much is true. But to take it out on a guy who didn't EXACTLY commit the crime is crap.

Oh i was just talking about other free storage sites, not here.

It'll be cool if you can use their API.

He just built an upload site; He didn't control WHAT was uploaded to the site.

More than that, he gave movie producers access to delete the files themselves. There's a bit more wrong with the crime as well. He's also being charged with conspiracy, which of course involves an intention (the state of mind) without the actual act. In some circumstances such a crime is necessary, but you know, you can see there needs to be a line draw before you start prosecuting people for their thoughts.

And secondly, he was in New Zealand and it's the US who want to charge him under their jurisdiction. You can say the servers were in the US (which oddly, I think they were) but what connection did he have to them? Users from all over the world uploaded files onto servers inside the US. The size megaupload is, you simply cannot check every link, and if you did, they would rename them and put a password on the .zip on the warez forums.

And lastly, with a mere extradition hearing pending, they took away all his assets. Here's short video of a NZ Barrister speaking in the High Court:
