I'm not sure about calling the like system "likes".

First of all, for this site, there is a clear distinction between the current "likes" and the reputation. Reputation points are given for your posts/comments - someone likes what you say or agrees with you, no big deal, you get increased rep. Likes on the other hand are given on your content - your tutorials, scripts, resource uploads or games. These are obviously more valuable, and this is what I'm referring to in this topic.

I have some options up there in the poll. Please vote for your favorite, or post any new suggestions below :)

In the future game-dev profiles I am planning to have the two numbers side by side as a measure of the members activity to other members. This is a long way off, but what I want to have is points from likes/reputations that the member can thus spend on promoting his/her game in the games section, like internal advertising for game developers who have contributed.

I personally believe that there should be a distinction between "Likes" "Used this" and "Reputation".

For Scripts people click a "Like" button if if they like it, regardless of if it is useful or not. This should be viewed in this way.

"Used This" Should be if they either plan to use it or have used it in their game. Maybe an option asking where they used it (ie they link to their game) and when you click an annotation a popup list will appear.

And "Reputation" should remain on user profiles for how good or bad their advice has been. + or - depending on each situation.

but all in all lets be honest, who actually uses these properly anyway?

I'm not fussed on reputation, but I think a like system is useful.

I duno why anyone would click like on a useless script. Obviously a lot of members, like you apparently, do not use the system. Why I think the system is important is that authors that will come to this site need incentives and recognition. If they post something and it never gets recognized then they're less likely to post more. Therefore my concern with a like system and used this system sitting side-by-side may cause issues because we want to maximize the sort of encouragement this system aims for. As an author, if you get 100 likes but 0 "used this"'s, might not be so good. On the otherhand, it's another form of feedback for the author. I think it's probably a matter of balancing it in terms of where the website is at in terms of content submissions.

I don't count but I like and rep frequently. I'm not too concerned on proper useage, you probably figured that out from what I said above. It's up to people how they use it. I'm much more concerned right now about giving authors incentives than indicating quality content.

What about a 5 or 10 star rating system AND a "used this" counter?

Could call it Endorsements instead of likes(If that would fit)?

Added to the poll :)

I think you're off the mark a little bit. Each like will attract points, the likes are not the points. I'm leaning towards +1, although not in a final way since that's google's thing. We need something unique. Things like "thanks" and "appreciations" probably arn't appropriate. You can like something without ever having a use for it, so, "like" and "+1" are good fits for the purpose of the system, but I'd prefer something unique.

What about "hearts"?
