Displaying HP on Screen in Pictures?

Question

Hey, I've been thinking recently about my game and decided, since when players are at some point in game where they're about to run out of HP, they don't really notice and end up... well, dying. So I decided that it'd be nice to have a system in common events where I can display the HP somewhere on screen while the player is moving around (my player has only 7 HP, so the number of pictures wouldn't be a problem).

Problem is, I can't really figure out how to do it because the common events are giving me a hard time.

If anyone could help me, I'd be grateful! :)

you'd be better off using a hud that displays the character HP, but i'd only suggest that if you have the player losing HP outside of battle a LOT. otherwise this is a feature I wouldn't really worry about. as long as you flash the screen(red or purple depending if just damage or poison usually) when they get hurt to let them know it's hurting them then it should be fine. Most games pre 2005 actually only used Huds if the battles happened on the same map as the running around occures.

What version of Rpg Maker are you using so I can suggest a few huds.

Well, I'm using RPG Maker XP, but I really prefer using the pictures (because I make the player lose HP outside of battle. There are no battles in my game, strictly puzzle-base.) Why? Because they come with a certain image that I'd like. And a certain styling of writing (how do you say it? font?). These images are digitally-drawn and have a number placed at the bottom.

What I'd like to do is set up some kind of control variable or likewise to change the pictures in the corner when the player's HP goes down (and like I said, very low HP in the game). The pictures appearing would be activated when the player picks up an item that will supposedly "display their health". Hence why I want to use pictures (comes with the design of the item).

Could you help me set it up in Common Events with control variables or something that would work? Because all I can do is access control variables and set "Operand" to the Actor's HP. I don't know what that actually does, but maybe that's a step in the right direction?

... I don't even under what Operand is, but... oh well.
