Santa Sprite Found Here

Welcome to the official holiday game contest. In this contest you will be asked to make a holiday(christmas) themed short game. We dont want any gore/blood in the game so make it as family friendly as you can .

Rules:
Game must be Christmas themed in some way.
Can use any tiles, sprites, etc....
May use scripts, events, etc....
May use anything you wish as long as you provide credits. If you dont know who to credit dont use the resource :ok:
Game must have a beginning, middle, and end with credits at the end.
Must have at least 1 battle.
Try to keep the game between 5-30min
Dont make battles impossible(Dont want to sit there and grind forever just to beat the next enemy/boss)

Can use any RPG Maker as long as its made by Enterbrain.

ALL RESOURCES THAT YOU DIDNT MAKE MUST BE IN THE ENDING CREDITS! IF YOU FAIL TO PROVIDE CREDIT I MAY FAIL TO JUDGE IT

Notes:
Game will be judged on but not limited to the following.
Story, Grammar, Content, Time, Gameplay, Mapping(#1 thing im looking for), Music, etc...
The game should be good in all areas like a normal game. I dont want to play a game where i just hit 1 button the entire time or battle enemies 90% of the time.
Make everything match. If you use RTP style stick with RTP style. If you use a non-rtp style there should be no RTP style stuff in it. Same for music, no one wants to play a game where theres rock music playing when it should be calm music lol.

Examples to help:
Santa might not be able to deliver all the presents in time and he has tasked you to deliver presents to a town for him.

Santa got captured by bigace and as an elf its up to you to save him or else Christmas will be ruined.

Bob the reindeer has gotten sick and cannot pull the sleigh this year. Its up to you to find another reindeer or a cure for bob.

Marked has stolen all the presents from your house. When you find him you can beat him up and take your presents back. If your a bad boy or girl also you can choose to steal all his presents :P.

Polraudio(monster 11) the demon has enslaved your town and killed santa. You and a team of people team up to kill polraudio to revive santa. The life force from polraudio is enough to revive santa.

Your job is to cook a good meal for your family for Christmas. Tasks might involve getting into a battle with food just to secure them for cooking.

Those are just some of the things you can do if your not good at coming up with ideas.

Prize:
Since this is a game development site and were all game developers first prize will be a game where you develop games :P
1ST: Game Dev Tycoon; If you already have the game and want something else i can only offer points. EDIT: Will throw in The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director's Cut only if 8 people joined the contest.
2ND: 200 Points
3RD: 50 Points

Crap, I need to work on this more. I've been too busy with Arcatis II, Skyrim, and procrastinating...Also getting like no sleep.

Could probably finish in the next couple days though.

Yup. I will pm you the games as they come in. Basicly were going to be basing everything on a 10 point scale and averaging them.

I will PM you later with details on how to judge them.

Well since bob was the only one who submitted a project he wins by default. I have reviewed the project and will provide a link below for everyone to play.

Bobs

Gameplay(8/10): Battles for the most part wernt to bad for a short game. The most interesting battle was the final battle since you actually had to heal and use the skills from bob to take the boss down faster. There was 1 shop in the game that allowed you to buy potions.

Music/Sounds(10/10): Music was a good fit for everything.

Story(6/10): Only story i really got was that you needed to save santa.

Mapping(8/10): Mapping was great in all the areas. The 2 places where mapping fell short was the transition from the snow to the evil rocks looking place and the school hallway. The hallway in the beginning could have had stuff on the walls like

pictures, bulletin board, and flyers.

Characters(5/10): Didnt feel like i got to learn anything about the characters. The comedy was great tho.

Total(7.4/10): Not bad for a very short game.

I'm happy with my score, even if it's the only one. It's probably better if you don't treat it as it's own game. The evil rock place is actually kind of important to the main story of my trilogy since you see 3 other places in the first game that look like that and more in the 2nd. I was also limited by not having a tileset for santa's toy factory.

I would have been happier with my score though, if I actually beat everyone else and wasn't the only one to submit their project >.>

In about a month or 2 i may run another contest with game prizes. Dont think it will be a game making contest tho as those are hard for people to do. May be just mapping with interaction. So you make a map and you event stuff to make it come alive. Will have to be playable of course.

I would have participated but the period was way too short. Making an entire game, even though short, takes a lot of time and it's not as if I had unlimited free time (not to mention I've had a child in december). Also it all depends on what you're expecting from contestants. Since I'm a scripter and my strong point is to be able to program innovative gameplay, when participating in a contest I would have a submission with not only original mapping and storyline and characters and stuff, but also original scripts - which will necessarily take longer than a straightforward RTP project using only pre-made scripts borrowed here and there. And that's a shame because it favors people who use stuff that already exists, rather than people who try to make up something new, because it leaves them more time to develop their game's contents. I think if you are to throw a contest again there should be more restricted rules as to which resources (whether graphics or scripts) are allowed. One would argue that it might restrain contestants' creativity, but hey, that's a contest after all, the point is to force people out of their habits and have them create something original anyways. Plus in order to judge there need to be precise criteria specified. How can you say which is better among two projects which have virtually nothing in common in the first place, other than on a fuzzy global impression?

Congratulations on the new baby moonpearl :)

Ok I agree with moonpearl, a future contest needs strict parameters. Actually we had a contest recently with 3 very decent entries.

This was also not officially advertised so it could have had way more attention. I plan to further develop the games section and use the dashboard as an area of internal advertising.

Ah, ah, thanks! Although I'm not sure you would say so if you knew my wife.  (that was Moonpearl's seemingly misogynous minute)

      Update #2

      Hello everyone!
My name is Omar and i recently developing a horror game repercussions.
before i start i like to say to everyone at Game development Unlimited for making repercussions
a popular game and making it to the top five.

We may not have much games available at the moment but for me, it's an accomplishment.
on today's update we will talk about the in-game lighting.

I am using Khas Awsome Lighting effect for ACE. which is nothing new and probably many people are already using it.
it's a good lighting effect and people don't seem to understand the power of it.

I well the lantern and flicker and makes everything even more scarier! and i have a few ideas with these light effects.
Now i want to make a horror game feel scary, unsafe, scary. I'm adding footstep sound effects yup
what could be a game without sound effects?

most of them have dynamic sound range so you won't be hearing one for a really long distance.
i am using each region to represent a SE. and i have some footsteps sounds to sound differently. if the player walks on concrete it will sound like your avatar is walking on concrete. if your avatar is walking on mud the footsteps will change to a more mushy icky sound effect...

Each region is using a different sound effect.

Last but not least the title screen

It's not much right now. the options are pixelated and the title isn't displaying. also that background isn't fitting. it's all in it's time.. but i have good ideas to make it appealing.

That's all for today GDU for more upcoming details check out my game page here at Game Dev Unlimited

      See ya dudes

I might just start using blogs again(last time was in 2009) to give me something to do and maybe a way to keep me working on my game. As you may know im working on a 2d open world game. You can kind of say its a 2d skyrim clone with some more features. In the past few days i been working on refining the systems. I been working on the following in the past few months:
Dynamic Rep System - Every action has an reaction. Meaning that if you make enemies with someone chances are that their friend will not like you at all or less depending how well their friends like you. They may even refuse to talk to you. If everyone in the town hates you chances are you may not be allowed into the town for very long and may have to pay to even be there, shops may charge you more, might not be able to do quests till people like you again. But word of your bad rep may get bandits to like you or fear you or even just try to take you out. Now if people like you in the town they may give you gifts, discounts, free places to stay, etc....
Resource Collecting - Get dem goods. The resource collecting is about the same as skyrim but slightly more advanced. To be able to collect certian resources better you will need to have the knowledge on how to collect that resource. You still wont be stopped for not knowing to get it but you will be crippled by lots. If you havent learned how to lets say mine iron there may be a small chance of you getting the iron. now if you know how to get the iron(read a skill book) you will always get iron but the higher your iron mining skill is the more iron ore you may be able to find. Each type of resource will have a level that will increase chances of finding more.
Crafting - 3x3 Crafting bench(sorry this isnt minecraft)? Crafting will be the same as skyrim in almost every way. Still have a bit to work on this so not to much info as of yet. Only difference between skyrim and my open world game is that you can take apart items for most of your resources back. Since potions are liquids you will only get the vial back(wish i had a way to get vial after using a potion, might try to code in the future).
Timed Events - Get your holiday on. I may add timed events for on christmass, thanksgiving, etc... On these days you will be able to find gift boxes, holiday themed armor and weapons, santa O.o, easter bunny!, etc... I will also add other type of events like random events. Maybe the god you chose as your god might abudct you and ask for a favor or throw you in hell for a while if you been bad to that god. When you complete the gods task you may get rewarded with an item, or even a power that you can use for a few hours.
Player Home - Home sweet home. You may be thinking "What do i need a home for?". The answer is simple. You need some place to store your stuff so you dont get overweight and crawl like a rock. If i can figure out a way to do this i may add the ability to buy furniture to decorate your home with. Ever thought about running your own guild? Well you can do that also. Just got to find out how in game cause im not going to spoil it for you.

The game is still far from done. I havent even really started the story yet. The game will comprise of islands, 4 main islands with HUGE cities, and many smaller islands with towns and stuff. I plan on having at least 200+ hours of content once the game gets released and plan on releasing free DLC after the game is out.

Hope you enjoyed that huge wall of text and things to come. If you like it please comment. If you wish to suggest something i could do in the game feel free to :) .
