Congrats   Dad moonpearl sounds good! A cute girl or a lovely boy?

Generally I think a playable map is much easier and better than a small game for a contest.

For me,The quality of a game is so important.Rarely a game developer is also a good painter or a good scripter but this is art of the game developer to make a high quality game with resources that are open for everyone to use.Judge doesn't need to pay attention to what your skill is,The game must be fun and this is what judge should care about.I mean making a neat script for your game is not a good point itself,It must be in a fun game.

Thanks Zahraa. It's a girl - I already have a boy.

Agreed. Also you can put a lot in a single map as long as you design it smartly. It would be an interesting challenge - design a single game sequence which makes the most of a single 20x15 map.

True, the problem is, what is fun or not is a pretty subjective concept. As far as I'm concerned I find most RPGs (and thus most RPG Maker projects) not fun at all, and the numerous discussions I have had with gamers of my generation and younger clearly show that I have a completely different idea of what makes a game fun to play. So I would be disappointed if I put myself at risk by taking the time to develop an innovative gameplay in a good quality script, and judges would not appreciate it because it's not what they're used to and there's still room for improvement, and had a better opinion of a submission which merely uses XAS. So I agree with you when you say the most important thing about a video game is that it must be fun, but I don't agree when you say your skills must not be judged, because then it puts people who want to make an original creation at a disadvantage and encourages them to borrow good quality art/music/scripts instead of risking making average quality themselves.

Let's say it this way: A game that all of its parts are professional is a high quality game.Your job is to be a game developer and do your best,Other parts belong to other guys who are professional in that way.I disagree with making a average quality music/art/script for your game instead using professional works from professionals. You're a great game developer, not a great artist. If you use average quality resources you get a average quality game (It's not true only for a few cases)

if you are a good scripter too,Then it's good for you and your game and makes it easier for you to develop what you like,I have to search a lot to find what I want and most of the time i can't find what i exactly want.Everyone can't be a professional artist,Musician and a scripter and a game developer so i believe you must use others' work so that all of elements in your game look amazing.

That's all

I send a kiss for your daughter from here :cute:

Hey moonpearl congrats on your baby girl :D take good care of her.

for me i think a mapping contest is decent enough because i do remember that there was one a few years ago.

maybe if we did a world design. such as a village, town, city even though they are from the same category it is still a mapping contest and the world should have stuff like ambiant Sound FX.

beats me....

oh and The Prize would be (Drum roll please)

Polraudio's Steam account.... if steam didn't have a bunch of DRM well not like a whole bunch of DRM. DRM like logging in from another computer and that stuff...eh you know what i'm talking about.

Your job is to be a game developer and do your best,Other parts belong to other guys who are professional in that way.

We're talking about having a contest here. We're not going team against team (well that could be but it's hard enough tu find single contestants), so the game you make, you have to make it alone, there is no other guy to help you. Besides everyone has some skill at some level. If you don't judge anything other than the game developer then you're telling the contestants there's no point trying to use what their own assets to make their game original, you're encouraging an industrial game-making where standards are to be met, rather than personal creation. I see your points but as far as I'm concerned I'm against it. Sure a good quality game is nice but if we cannot explore new paths of creation even in an amateur community contest because we have to comply with a certain image of what a quality game is supposed to be, then I'm quitting game-making.

That wouldn't do for me because there is not gameplay or programming whatsoever in a mapping contest. It's just about eye-candy and I don't think it's the true purpose of game-making. The good part about it is that it's easier to do and you're more likely to find contestants, but as far as I'm concerned I wouldn't be interested.

So my standards are too high for an amateur contest.I agree it needs a special kind of creation to make a complete game only by yourself but I don't accept it cause you pay much more than you get if you choose this way.Anyway as a player I never change an unoriginal high quality game with an original average quality one.

      Update #2

      Hello everyone!
My name is Omar and i recently developing a horror game repercussions.
before i start i like to say to everyone at Game development Unlimited for making repercussions
a popular game and making it to the top five.

We may not have much games available at the moment but for me, it's an accomplishment.
on today's update we will talk about the in-game lighting.

I am using Khas Awsome Lighting effect for ACE. which is nothing new and probably many people are already using it.
it's a good lighting effect and people don't seem to understand the power of it.

I well the lantern and flicker and makes everything even more scarier! and i have a few ideas with these light effects.
Now i want to make a horror game feel scary, unsafe, scary. I'm adding footstep sound effects yup
what could be a game without sound effects?

most of them have dynamic sound range so you won't be hearing one for a really long distance.
i am using each region to represent a SE. and i have some footsteps sounds to sound differently. if the player walks on concrete it will sound like your avatar is walking on concrete. if your avatar is walking on mud the footsteps will change to a more mushy icky sound effect...

Each region is using a different sound effect.

Last but not least the title screen

It's not much right now. the options are pixelated and the title isn't displaying. also that background isn't fitting. it's all in it's time.. but i have good ideas to make it appealing.

That's all for today GDU for more upcoming details check out my game page here at Game Dev Unlimited

      See ya dudes

I might just start using blogs again(last time was in 2009) to give me something to do and maybe a way to keep me working on my game. As you may know im working on a 2d open world game. You can kind of say its a 2d skyrim clone with some more features. In the past few days i been working on refining the systems. I been working on the following in the past few months:
Dynamic Rep System - Every action has an reaction. Meaning that if you make enemies with someone chances are that their friend will not like you at all or less depending how well their friends like you. They may even refuse to talk to you. If everyone in the town hates you chances are you may not be allowed into the town for very long and may have to pay to even be there, shops may charge you more, might not be able to do quests till people like you again. But word of your bad rep may get bandits to like you or fear you or even just try to take you out. Now if people like you in the town they may give you gifts, discounts, free places to stay, etc....
Resource Collecting - Get dem goods. The resource collecting is about the same as skyrim but slightly more advanced. To be able to collect certian resources better you will need to have the knowledge on how to collect that resource. You still wont be stopped for not knowing to get it but you will be crippled by lots. If you havent learned how to lets say mine iron there may be a small chance of you getting the iron. now if you know how to get the iron(read a skill book) you will always get iron but the higher your iron mining skill is the more iron ore you may be able to find. Each type of resource will have a level that will increase chances of finding more.
Crafting - 3x3 Crafting bench(sorry this isnt minecraft)? Crafting will be the same as skyrim in almost every way. Still have a bit to work on this so not to much info as of yet. Only difference between skyrim and my open world game is that you can take apart items for most of your resources back. Since potions are liquids you will only get the vial back(wish i had a way to get vial after using a potion, might try to code in the future).
Timed Events - Get your holiday on. I may add timed events for on christmass, thanksgiving, etc... On these days you will be able to find gift boxes, holiday themed armor and weapons, santa O.o, easter bunny!, etc... I will also add other type of events like random events. Maybe the god you chose as your god might abudct you and ask for a favor or throw you in hell for a while if you been bad to that god. When you complete the gods task you may get rewarded with an item, or even a power that you can use for a few hours.
Player Home - Home sweet home. You may be thinking "What do i need a home for?". The answer is simple. You need some place to store your stuff so you dont get overweight and crawl like a rock. If i can figure out a way to do this i may add the ability to buy furniture to decorate your home with. Ever thought about running your own guild? Well you can do that also. Just got to find out how in game cause im not going to spoil it for you.

The game is still far from done. I havent even really started the story yet. The game will comprise of islands, 4 main islands with HUGE cities, and many smaller islands with towns and stuff. I plan on having at least 200+ hours of content once the game gets released and plan on releasing free DLC after the game is out.

Hope you enjoyed that huge wall of text and things to come. If you like it please comment. If you wish to suggest something i could do in the game feel free to :) .
