Selling RPGmaker games?

Recommended Posts

It might be a noobish question, but it bugged me: is it actually legal to print and sell an original RPG which was produced with RPGmaker? ( In japan, there are many doujin games in gameshops. )

let's give some simple examples -

Game 1: made with RPGmaker without any edits, just the basig RPGmaker material (graphics, sound, music, scripts )

Game 2: made with RPGmaker but attached several edits and not-self made material (graphics, sound, music, scripts )

Game 3: made with RPGmaker but attached several edits, nearly all self made (graphics, sound, music, scripts )

With the legal one yes. But it has to be your own recourses or the RTP unless the other people who made recourses in your game gives you permission to sell it with their recourses then its ok.

Game 1: You may sell games using the RPG Maker XP RTP.

Game 2: Legally, I'm sure you can. Most resources you will find will say you can use with credit. Most will not mention commercial use. But if you go around selling a game with resources made by users from the RMXP community, there's not a whole lot they can do. I may be wrong about this, someone feel free to correct me. If you credit your resources, you should be fine.

Game 3: Enterbrain lets you sell games made with the software, so why not?

-nods- If you use either the Japanese RPG Maker (by that, I mean no edits or hacks to translate it), or the legal v1.02 version, then yes you can. However, what no one else has made mention of is this: If you cracked your program in some way (such as used the translated RPG Maker, the Postilaty Knights Version, or just used a keygen for v1.02) then it is not legal to sell it. In fact, it really isn't legal to USE it...but -shrugs- I don't think anyone here will warn or ban you for using a cracked version...either way, though, it isn't legal to sell games with them. If, however, you spent the $60 to make the game, you are allowed to sell your games as "Shareware" I believe...which means you can't sell them in stores, but you can have people pay to download the game -nods-

As long as you give credit yes, and i mean full credit don't even put and to whoever else i forgot in the credits. But also it have to be a realy good game in order to sell, id be disappointed to even pay 2 bucks for a game that isnt good.

Haha, hmm - that's understandable.

Oh that's good. And 60 bucks really isn't THAT much for a computer program. (Compared to Photoshop for example..)

Adobe Products are overpriced. No lie.

And if you sell your games, don't be a douche.

I remember a small team proclaimed their game to be the best RPG Maker game ever however on the final version there were several bugs in the game that disallowed progression in the game. Tons of unused resources, over all, it was a total newb game. They sold it around 15$ each.

It is legal, 2 games that were made by Amaranth Studios (http://www.amaranthia.com) which were Aveyond I: Rhen's Quest and Aveyond II: Ean's Quest, both of them cost $20, (they are worth the money) and they are mostly all custom material (I would say 95%).

But by using a Keygen it will register the program, making it identical to a purchased version of RPG Maker XP, right? So if you sold a game made in an illegally registered copy of RMXP, wouldn't it be the same as selling it in a legally registered copy?

Yes, it would be the same as releasing it with a legally activated copy as you are still using the legal program.

Most key generators simply work up a key that will open up the functionality in the software itself on your computer and it has nothing to do with actually registering the product. At any rate, it's a pretty simple process for them to see your game being sold, wonder if it's legal, check to see if purchase and registration records match up and then take some nominal legal action if they don't.

On the subject of shareware, you could even press it and sell it on dvd or cd if you wanted and had the resources. The shareware portion of the deal is in the RTP content not being liscensed to be distributed by users, though you have liscense to utilize it in your games. So make whatever you want and distribute it anyhow you want as long as you aren't distributing any of the rtp content, including rtp scripts and plug-ins and other bric-a-brac yourself. The end user needs to download the RTP data themselves from enterbrain.

Actually, it makes a serial code that is checked by the Enterbrain server when you log on, that is why you cannot open VX or XP without the internet.

I would think it's legal to sell a game using translated XP, I mean if you search it on google then it will show a translated host BY enterbrain so... I have reason to think it's legal...

Oh, well yeah I guess that's the way to go if you don't have Internet. I feel sorry for those who don't......

It seems that whether it's illegal or not to sell depends on whether you have completed the registration procedure rather than the legality of the editor.

That would make sense normally but wouldn't that clash with people using the RTP?

Well I just want to point out, if you illegally downloaded the game then I doubt it matters to the downloader if it's illegal to sell. Like gun restrictions in banks, if your there to rob the bank, I doubt you care that it's illegal to bring a gun into the bank.
