This question is something i feel that is needed to be talk about.

Do you think its a good idea to make Fan Games or Non-Fan Games?

I personally think its not so much of a good idea unless you know 100% what your doing and you have made a Non-Fan game. Making a fan game could be a good way to start but can also be a bad thing to do. The best thing you can do is start a game with your own ideas. This helps you become more creative and be able to express your ideas as you want them to be. Fan games are a good way to expand after you have made your own game. Fan games are nothing more than a copy of a game to expand it and its no fun to copy, just like its no fun to win all the time. What im trying to say is making fan games makes it look like you have no creativity of your own and about 95% of them are not worth playing.

I once tried a FF7 fan game someone made and has been working on for months and to tell you the truth it was the biggest piece of shit i ever seen. Looked like they spent 5 min on the whole game and it had nothing to do with FF7 and had the whole theme wrong. Furthermore lets just say every map looked as if it was made by a 2 year old. I found out it was their first game. Another point im trying to say is, sure your making a fan game and its your first who cares how it looks? Well your wrong! It makes your game look bad and it makes the actual game look bad.

Getting a little off topic but still keeping the same point.

I think everyone knows the anime Dragonball and Dragonball Z. Look at the movie Dragonball. Dang that was the worst thing i ever watched. I was ready to go to Hollywood and shoot everyone who made it because it made them look bad and made the Anime look very bad.

Remakes/Fan Made =

I agree with you one HUNDRED percent. I assume you are talking about RMXP games mostly though, right? (This is in RM discussion)

I can stand to see fan games on the internet, because I know they are going to be crappy. There are exceptions of course, like for example this zelda fan game.

However they generally do suck. People should refrain from making fan games in RMXP if they can, because it might cause them to drop RMXP altogether. :(

It is also really unoriginal most of the time. <_<

That's my two cents.

I find it funny how people say Fan Games are unoriginal because now-a-days every game is unoriginal. So in your game will someone try to take over the world (been done), take over the world again (been done), kidnap some sweet and pretty girl (been done), take over the world (been done), hero falls in love with best friend (been done), hero falls in love with child hood friend, been done....so I wonder what is so original about creating an original story because in truth it is not original you just use the idea of another. This is the same concept for fan games, because now you can tell your own story, but you must know the rules first. First off look at FF games yes the same names are used, but Cid from FF does not look like Cid in FFX. And this is why I am neutral because it is possible to create a fan based game that people like, but YOU MUST RESEARCH what you are about to create. If anything stay away from sequels to games that should not have one (e.g. FFV is a one time game and has no sequel). Now since I use FF as an example one could argue well they did it with FFX and this is true. But they left FFX open for a sequel and thus it fit. STOP using RIPPED sprites (Mario based games are okay to use ripped sprites, but not in FF as the characters never look the same (except in sequels or prequels) and I told you to stay away from one of them. Also a RPG Mortal Kombat fan game is a no go and this goes for any FIGHTING game; either make it a fighter or leave it alone. Games like The Legend of Dragoon would be okay to make a squeal, but do it right!!! So what is a fan game? Anything you like and wish to tell your own story (originality has nothing to do with it except DO SOME RESEARCH).

Example; in 2005 a Indie fan game was held and many people entered, even I did. I created Super Mario: Time Warp and in short Bowser was fooling around with a time machine and the past, present, and future collided sending Mario and his friends on an adventure to save their past, present, and future. It took second place landing me $200 and a new PS2. SO if you do make a fan game DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!!!!!!!

Yea RESEARCH is key in making them. Most people don't. They just say o I'm going to make a fan game and start before doing anything.

Fan games only work if the person knows about the games and series. They also need experience with the game development programs. I have seen some damn good fan games, and some awful looking fan games. A good fan game will make the creator look great, but a bad fan game will make the creator look like shit that came out of my ass this morning.

It depends on the vision of the creator of the game. And whether it will be fan-game or a remake, it's value in principle, no. I worked and worked and over the fan project, and over the remake.

The only complication fan-games ratio for a remake - is something that should not get out of the bounds of the original plot.

Fangames seem like a great idea to make, but in all honesty, they are much harder to deveop than an indie project.

Care for me to explain why?

Its due to the general nature of the game itself. The developer had a certain invision while making it that a fan could never recreate, on top of the fact that their would be alot of fans of the series would probably disagree with the events and circumstances that occur.

Fangames are also linear and lack creativity compared to an indie idea, and that fact can be weighed on all the other factors that cause us to lose motivation in game making. As a personal preference, a successful project takes alot of preplanning and a bit of research and notes. Don't get me wrong, but a lot of people don't think that sort of thing is important, it really does help.

Fan games are fine to make, so long as you do research on the idea first...I kinda wanna remake the original LoZ myself, so that it's played like a more modern 2D LoZ game...I just don't know where to find the kind of scripts or graphics I'd need for such a task.

Well you could start learning Game Maker Language and Game Maker itself, and you could make your own 2D zelda game no problem! Plus you are really good at writing, so there should no problem with storyline writing. You could use your female link stories!

Personally I think that there's no reason a fangame should be inherently bad, but the sad fact is that they do tend to be. A lot of FF fangames disappoint me, because they either just rip off one of the games in the series, or, amusingly, diverge too far.

Typically any FF game will have a new world and new gameplay, but that doesn't mean people can stick 'Final Fantasy' in their title on any old RPG, because there's more to it than that. In an FF, I expect to see certain recurring elements: Chocobos, classic monsters (bomb, cactuar, Ochu, Malboro, Behemoth etc.) classic summons (shiva, ifrit etc. Or at least a nod to them) weapon and item names (Save the Queen, Genji Glove, Phoenix Down). All of the RPG maker FFs I've played to date are either poor copy sequels, or they just don't satisfy what I want from a Final Fantasy game, which is innovation combined with familiar features and homages. Most of the fun for me, of a new FF is seeing how they work the homage elements into a new setting, like in 12, the summons were all new, but the old summon names were used for airships, or in 8, there were no character classes, but the limit breaks and character stats suggested their classes (Selphie with high luck and a random limit was essentially a 'Gambler' class, while Irvine's high accuracy and shot limit made him a 'Hunter/Archer'). So yeah, the important thing with a fangame is research. These little things matter! A good fangame ought to give you that same feeling as the original game. Scratch an itch so to speak.

I'm FAIRLY moderate when it comes to Fan Games. Like many have stated it depends on who the one making them. Personally I think that if done right, a Fan Game ican be as good or better than the original. I sometimes troll the Pokecommunity forums and some of the games there are look better than the commercial games. In fact Fan Games can provide a great new twist or perspective on a original's story. But alas, Fan Games of high quality are in short suppply(like many original games also!) Heck once I finish my game I may make a sequel to my all- time fave game, Magic of Scheherazade.

Personally, I hate fan games. Though it's probably because every fan game is based off of final fantasy (I won't even give it the credit of capitalization) which I hate. Maybe if it was based on something else; remakes are fine as long as they're good.

Fan Games never turn out. Ever. Constant conflict of interest from 2 viewpoints are always causing issues. For instance, some people think Sora is too goofy, so they toughen him up. Others think that is bad, and hate it. Just a total conflict of interest. Like Me and Emmi with Zelda... >.>

its simple, its a good idea if you can pull it off... its bad if you cant lol.

im not gonna judge a book by its cover, (game by its style/genre) but by how fun it is...

an example: Assassin's Creed (I and II), many people heard about the religious work in the games, and it causes a lot of people not to play it... even if they admit its fictional lol... and yet there are countless ratings from critiques and players of perfection...

its all based on the person lol, are you gonna shoot it down just because other games that try the same fail? or are you gonna give it a shot? lol.

now outside of RMXP, games like movie games are always done while rushing, and people say it causes poor quality... i find a lot of movie games fun and entertaining... not perfect but worth the money that i spent... for the used copy

while games like Naruto, i cant stand to buy... from american stores lol, i just hate the way they pronounce everything... and how they spelled Gai's name Guy... (I think it was Gai o_O lol)

But in my final conclusion, i say non fan games are better to make only because you're limitless... and its original, and it can prepare you for an actual career in gaming.
