CTF - Capture the Freedom

Overview

'CTF - Capture the Freedom' is a first-person shooter created with the 'Sauerbraten' FPS engine. It focuses on classes more than weapons. And although being set in a war environment, there aren't many war-esque elements.

It supports online and LAN multiplayer, in-game map editing, a single-player campaign, offline multiplayer with bots, open-source programming and a neat soundtrack to boot.

Story

The American Civil War was a massive knot in the rope that is America's history. Many were slaughtered mindlessly. Nobody knew that on of the largest, most violent wars in history was between to factions of people from the same country.

When the next Civil War came to turn, the modern era watched in awe. The entire world was enthralled in the fight. Bonds between nations were destroyed and new ones built.

The three main contenders in the war, Russia, Australia and Africa, went the whole nine yards in weapon development. They forged a faint alliance and gathered their elite soldiers into one group.

These three classes of soldier will work together to restore peace between the contending countries, or get a bullet blown through their skulls trying...

Classes and Weapons

There are three classes to play as, each with their own unique arsenal of weapons.

Specialist

Nationality: Russia

Weapons: Long-barrelled Sniper Rifle, Katana, SMG, Grenade Launcher.

Concept Art: Original Sketch by Myke / Traced image by Midnight Assassin

Bio: The Specialist is an elite killing machine. He believes that killing is an artform, not a way to end someone’s life. Armed with a long-barrelled rifle built for stealthy long-range attacks, A submachine gun and Katana sword for close-range kills, and an grenade launcher to wear down the opposition, he himself is greatly slowed down.

Assailant

Nationality: Africa

Weapons: Single-shot rifle, Assault Machine Gun, Chaingun

Bio: The Assailant is a monster bred for carnage and terror, and doesn’t know of the word “peace”. Half-human and half-mutant, you can expect the Marine to be quite “bulletproof”, so to speak.

Lightweight weapons? Peh, who needs them when your armed with a machine gun, a rifle and a chaingun? Probably those that’ll end up on the end of the bullet, but not the Assailant.

Recon

Nationality: Australia

Weapons: Blade, Winchester 1300 Shotgun, Hand Grenade

Bio: Get in, kill a few troops, blow some shit up, get out. That’s how the Recon does it. Quick and efficient kills work better than lengthy planned-out operations that end up getting yourself killed.

Being the only girl trooper in the Resistance is also a bit hard. Having a masked exterminator and a mutant running beside you can get a bit awkward when there are enemies to stab.

Lightweight weapons being her forte, the Recon carries with her a blade, a lightweight shotgun and a grenade for those extremely awesome explosions. I mean come one, who doesn’t like seeing a blood shower in the afternoon?

Compatibility

Operating Systems: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows7, Linux Kernel

Hand Controller: No

Fullscreen/Windowed Toggling: Yes

Internet/LAN: Yes

Single player w/ bots: Yes

Campaign Mode: Yes

Team

Right now, we need people to do 3D modelling, artwork, music composition and voice acting. For voice acting, if you can do a neat African/Russian voice, then just apply here. My sister has already got the Australian voice covered.

FAQs

None as of yet.

No, but one of my friends on another forum drew up some concept art for the Recon and the Specialist.

Alright, I've got some concept art up for the Russian Specialist. I'm doing the Recon now, and might do the Marine Assailant (I've changed the name, as I've changed around the character's look).

This project seems rather more high caliber than it actually is, noting your comments at the end and lack of screenshots of projects on top of the fact you've had a history of dumped projects isn't too promising. (That may be a one due reason why no-one on this board has volenteered yet) Whilst in the early stages of my own team 3D project I posted some form of progress, perhaps the software you're using would be a good remedy while you can't post actual in-game content.

As a final note, if you need a 3D modeller, chances are you won't get it for free unless you want a crap job. Its very difficult to do, since I've had experiance creating 3D title graphics in the past. That said, its easier to work with and animate than 2D graphics.

As a final little note, the link to 'Myke's concept sketch is nil but working and your trace of it could perhaps be more solid and defined, as it looks more flesh than metal. (Shift + Click with a brush is good for rigid edges)

Thanks for the tip, although I'm sure you know that drawing with a mouse is damn hard.

It is, and I'd advise a tablet if you can get one, likewise mouse can do the same job, but it just takes longer. I've used a mouse 10+ years and I have a tablet I bearly use simply because I'm more used to the mouse. (Probably also because my tablet isn't pressure-sensitive, which is also quite vital)

Well that makes me feel beaten down.

Well, seeing that my machine won't run the Sauerbraten engine anymore, I'll have to put the actual development on hold.

When I install a working copy of Windows, I'll resume production. So for now, I'll be sending out emails and ringing numbers to get a professional 3D modeller if my backup freelancer pulls out. Music will be a cynch (Newgrounds, hell yeah), and the art is all done for the major playable classes (Recon, Specialist and Assailant).

And also, the engine has been updated from the 'Trooper' edition to the 'Shader' edition, which isn't completely open source anymore and is compressed to one file; so I'll have to completely restructure the current progress to fit with the Shader edition's architecture. This means that I'll have to go from 40% back to 5% progress. Ouch.

I won't request lockage, as I'm sure commenters and critics want to put their two cents in. But as said before, it's near impossible to work on it with my current computer. Linux has let me down for the second time.
