Project: Lumis

Ok, so heres my current game in progress, everything is in early stages especially the name. From the start, I aimed to design the game in a new uinqu style to most other rm games, so I came out with the style seen below in the screenshots. It is primarily an adventure/ puzzle game with occasional enemies/ bosses. I wrote a little bit in my recent blog but not much.

Figure1: Entrance

emtance.png

Figure2: Objects

objects.png

Leves seen on the tree in figure 2 will be moving, slowly swaing back and forth, and slight slight movements with bushes, flowers etc (maybe).

The levels wont be static with tiles/ objects situated in a permanant position, instead, when you walk and explore the objects will appear grow in front of the path your taking. Not every object will grow in front of you, only new areas will but previosuly explored areas will remain having key objects such as Tree or two, path, large rock/ boulder, door etc but small obejcts like flowers, grass, smull bsuhes etc will grow.

I'll keep posting updated screenshots and additional info :) I'm still working on the storyline but I will release the story when I have some more info to release.

Hm looks interesting, if the style is meant to be the black and while like that almost constantly then it looks familiar. I remember a side scrolling arcade game on xbox where you had to move within light stepping into the shadows would cause you to fall and have to restart the level. I was a puzzle game as well as there were you had to turn on light sources and move with the light in some instances and sometimes having to fall to a level below the one you started on, it was challenging and fun while at the same time an original concept. I like this style honestly and cutting down on the amount of monsters would put more emphasis on the puzzles that are there, perhaps later a possible version 2 for those who like the "random" encounters for fights. I wish you the best of luck with this I'm looking forward to it honestly.

well i like your style. though i would not recomend for the whole game to be black and white. it;s to tiring for the eyes. maybe try some different combinations in some parts of the game? :) anyway, hot did you do it? did you use rmxp or something else? please tell me, i'm reaaaally amazed! i like projects with unique style, like that. and i'm sure you put a lot of effort onto that!:) i can;t wait to see more!:)

Hm, nanou if you're talking about the game I described earlier, I didn't make that it was a game I played on XBOX360. It was just an arcade game someone made with the XNA Game Developers Kit which costs to much (no wonder Microsoft is getting rich).

I too love games with a unique style and challenging puzzles. So this game has me highly interested. I have some ideas for some interesting puzzles that you could implement as well as some cipher idea's to really mix things up.

It can be done but it will need a very effective anti-lag script to run smoothly. I've seen the growing thing done before, it didn't look natural like it should have. Really it could be done with simple event with a change graphic done every few seconds (Side note: 30 frames = 1 second) it wont really look completely natural but it will at least look decent as far as the leaves moving in the trees that's doable with a sprite the same way that you can start a fire burning (check the box next to move animation and stop animation and it will cycle through the walking animation without moving). I should probably leave this to madanchi to elaborate on since it is his thread.

thanks people for the feedback :D :D the xna game sounds interesting, i've never seen it before either so i had no influence from it. To answer your question Nanou, I drew the graphics in photoshop and converted them into a tile, also it isn't just going to be black and white, more colours will be implimented a fact :)

The animations and the growing part can be done very easy, rather than the usual 4 frame animation movement I would use 16 frames animation (for the growing and object animation, not the playable character), the object would have to be static position, it couldnt move around - and a character could only be facing 1 direction. so this way i can get max smoothness for the animations :) Even better, I was thinking of using multiple character animations like 32 frames - (after the first 16 frame character has finished, just change the character graphic to a new one, i suppose then there could be a 64 fps animation of an object)

As for the development, I have worked more on the tiles and strongly thought of what features the game may include. One idea came to mind that you obtain a flute were you play certain tunes and it either creates/ grows something or opens up new pathways that previously were locked etc.

I'm not just quite yet going to say the storyline, I'll wait first, but what I can say is it's different, sad and almost touching in a way.

The flute idea sounds nice, familiar in a way, as it makes me think of Ocarina of Time and, at the same time unique. I'm sort of looking forward to spoilers now.

I most liekly won't be working on Lumis during Christmas, and my 3 projects for uni will take up most time. After this, I hope to be pwered up and ready to kick start this game again. I'm eager to start work on it as well with new ideas for levels, environments etc

In the time being, I will reveal a brief part of the storyline behind Lumis.

Story Line:

Game Lumis is about a young boy in search of an escape route in an unseen world of imagination. You start off with no clue what so ever as to how you got in the world and what the world is. As you venture through the game, you begin to see hints as to what the place is. It is down to the player in realising/ discovering what the place actually is and how you may have gotten into it.

The ending of the game will reveal what/ how everything is, you are a young boy, in an unimaginable word all created by the boy you play. It turns out, the boy is in hospital enduring a coma from what ever incident happened. Progressing through the game you encounter loved ones, outside objects, voices etc and the further you are in the game, the worse the coma becomes, may it be physical health issues (internal bleeding, failure etc) or mental.

The last boss will most determine if you survive and wake up from the coma or die from it. (so, win the bos you live, die and you die in the coma)

Hope you like it :D, again, it's very vague

Nice one for the storyline, I'm curious how the health related events will effect the surrounding world. I'm guessing that there will be catastrophic events in the imaginary world giving hints to what is really happening. I'm also curious as to what could have caused the coma in the first place but, instead of it being spoiled I'll just look forward to finding out in the game.

What? How are you making those graphics with RMXP?

Well, theyre created in photoshop then imported into rmxp as a tileset.

aha fair enough, it'll be more enjoyable discovering it throughout the game itself :) I'm also curious how the health issues may affect the world, I have ideas and thoughts (visually) on the matter

Ok, so after finishing my course deadlines and finally sorting out my courses that I'm applying for, I've started work on Lumis :D

I'll try to keep updating daily, but I am generally busy and I really don't know what with XD My time just dissapears out of no were these days

A little creature design and some random stuff

creaturesetccopy.png

Water looks perticulary out of place and almost ugly because of this, but I am in the idea generation stage ;)

itemsareasideascopy.png

anyways, this is an entrance to a temple, the statues reveal a new species that could possibly be enemies or allies etc in-game. Maybe they control this strange dream world, maybe the dream world is actually a real world that only can be reached when dead, dreaming or unconcious etc - all just thoughts, I suppose if it is a real world then the game could include very subtle hints towards it

yes, this is in-game and is 640x480 (I scaled and croppped it to be sure)

charactertemplestatueco.png

I have mainly stuck to white colour as I find it harder to draw in other colours. I'll most likely use the recolour brush in photoshop to change the colour if needed. Too much white may hurt and strain the eye, so other colours to be implimented are key for future development

The artwork looks interesting. The two creatures in the second drawing caught my attention. Keep it up!

Ok Update:

I've begun design of a website for Lumis, its in rough stages obviously, but as the game is quiete arty, the website design is a little arty.

The name 'Skylant Shore' is just a musicians name on another forum i used to go on. I simply wanted to include his name because it was one of his pieces that first inspired Lumis.

Text and pretty much everything on the design is basic, rough, just starting out kind of stuff.

Wow has it been a long time since I last posted in this thread  Well, Lumis Project has been kicked back into devlopment, I admit, I neglected it despite my love of it... All I can assume is other things took priority, which tbh is pretty spot on. Anyways, not much new media to share with you, but for now, could you help me with something little?

Which version of the archway thing do you think is better?

This

OR this

All i can say is....wow...

This is so stylistic it is incredible. Would it be wrong to say I may have just creamed myself?

Beautiful, but to be more constructive, I like the second archway better, I liked the first one too, because it stands out, but i think the second one, something about it makes it more inviting to walk underneath..or something.

I hope you get this finished!

thank you very much :)

To me, the second arch seems more refined, still needs a bit more detail added, I suppose they're both the best in their own way

Here's a new piece I've done :) it's when your baout to obtain the flute item as seen in previouse screenshot.

After you grab the flute, the area overflows with a sudden surge of plant life (flowers, grass, leaves, bushes, trees etc).

The green vine/ flow/ leaf design in the second picture is just something i threw together, it may appear if you use the item or when you obtain it, not really sure tbh

Music:

Ok, so it's about time I shined some light onto the music section of my game.

This piece is going to be in some lonely area, possibly when your in exploring a big area or temple.

This I imagine for some sort of water temple area

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlvqIKuE254&feature=related

This I can really see it working for a few thigns, credits, in-game menu, evolved to next stage or something like that and possible completetion of a boss/ level.

Starying menu music, I really like this piece.

Scene music, or event or even scinematic in-game scene
