scripts

Question

well, first of all, i don't know if it's the right place to put this topic, but i just really had to ask.

how do you use scripts? how do they affect your game and what should i be aware of? i am just totally noob concerning any issue around scripting and i really wanna learn some basics so that i can use them in my game. (of course i don't mean that i want to learn scripting, i don't believe it's a logical question right now, i just wanna undestand how they work...) than you:)

Scripts are pretty easy to use, as long as there's no compatibility issue (which isn't often in my experience) then you just have to insert and past a script right above the main, some scripts will require a bit of work to use for example XAS. Other simpler ones such as a CMS and some if not all sideview battle systems don't require any work. You can do more than a ton of stuff with them going as far as to include mini games (I had a coin golf game in an old project but that was a script written by a friend of mine who kinda just disappeared on me). I'm learning to script now and it's not difficult to learn what everything is, I'm just having trouble thinking logically enough to actually put it to practice to do what I need. If you plan to use scripts I would say the best thing is to learn at least the bare minimal of editing scripts as well so it will be easier to use, I recommend Leon's scripting class here since it's easy to understand and entertaining enough to keep you interested, though it's not something that you absolutely need if you plan to use them it just makes the use and understanding of them easier.

Side Battle System refferes to the Perspective of the battle. As a default, RMXP is a FPBS First Person battle system, where you are at the perspective of the battlers. A side-view battle system is when you are viewing the battle from the side. (Like Final Fantasy 1) It's a more preferred battle system.

Then there is tactical battle systems, where you see them from above. Then there are CMS's(custom menu systems) and AMS's(advanced message systems). I'm not a scripter, nor am I pretending to be, but Ruby and RGSS is made flexible enough that you don't have to make an RPG. You can create a school-drama, love story, FPS(first person shooter), side scroller, pokemon game(which I think are RPG anyway) and I think that there was a script out there that made it a card game... The point is, with scripts (and a little creativity and inginuity), anything is possible. The sky is never the limit.

This is all to true, reach for the stars and if you reach them, keep reaching. I've seen a few arcade games like pong and duck hunter made in RGSS which was great. I've never seen a pure card game made in RGSS but I have seen creative card games done as a minigame. Best of luck and hope that this encourages you to take a page from my book and learn to script.

Pokemon is a RPG, it has hit or miss dice rolls and leveling as well as a storyline.

The Legend of Zeda is not a RPG, it lacks the hit or miss dice rolls and leveling,

just because it has a storyline doesn't make it a RPG. It's an Action/Adventure puzzle.
