Question about selling rights.

Question

Okay, let's say I created a game entirely with the RTP that came with RPG Maker XP. Would I be allowed to sell said game, or would there be some sort of copyright issue?

I wouldn't imagine there would be since I paid for the program and RTP, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

as it stands you can only produce games that are freeware or comercial with the resorces included in the rtp package, if you wanted to produce a game for sale purpose then you would have to create all your resorces from scratch, or source material that does not include rtp material or edits of this, as buying the program is buying program itself and all the rtp data is to help you get started and still has the rights of enterbrain.

Ouch. :/

Well what if I added them in the credits of the game? Do you think they would approve of it then, or is it a lost cause?

im not sure, i do know that they have a sales support on there website, you would be better speaking directly with the company than asking on a forum as they will tell you exactly what you need to know on this term

Alright, I might just do that.

Thank you! :)

Well, I doubt Enterbrain would get on your case if you sold a game using their RTP. In fact with the older RMs they endorsed doing so.

But.. selling an RMXP game? .-.

Do you really think anyone would buy it? And I really don't mean that as an insult; I haven't even seen your game. >.<

It's just.. RMXP is more of a for fun thing..

I am *pretty* sure when you purchase RMXP you are able to make commercial games even with the rtp (PLEASE DO NOT QUOTE ME, I AM NOT SURE) (commercial as in for sale)

however to expand on what Kiri said, despite me not into selling rmxp games....people will buy, but i think it's more along the lines of: would someone buy a rmxp game made with RTP?

By all means do what you wish, but just something to think about. (cuz people have bought/sold rmxp games before, i dunno how successful; but generally they have custom graphics, music, scripts etc.)

All of you are wrong. You can sell your game with the RTP material. Please read Enterbrain's statement below. This only applies to non-edited material.

http://www.rpgmakerweb.com/support/faq/227/970#faq970

Yes, you can distribute games you created with RPG Maker XP/VX or IG Maker, using its included (or added on) materials, as freeware or commercial ware. You are also allowed to modify the materials with other software such as Photoshop, provided they are only used within RPG Maker or IG Maker software, and not sold/or distributed. You can also include your own graphics and music if you wish. Please ensure that those games do not include any material which infringe others' rights

Well I could have told you yes with out RATED's post. This is a question asked on many forums/communities and it is always the same answer. Yes you can.

But.. selling an RMXP game? .-.

People do do this and make decent money, but they use all original resources (maybe an RTP here and there though).

Aside from the RTP, neither are you allowed to profit from the default RGSS scripts. You need to write your own.

There's a troll here!

BTW, there's game on the Iphone with RTP's and such, so I don't see how you can't.

To those of you who thought you couldn't sell an RMXP game with the RTP, where did you hear that? I can't believe Kiriashi didn't know that :P

That's probably illegal though.. It's supposed to be used with the engine.

Are you sure? Doesn't really make sense that you are allowed to sell games with the RTP but not the scripts.

I'm pretty sure you can use the scripts as well, just like the rtp. This is a discussion that has been held hundred times and at the end everyone always concludes that we can ue the rtp and rgss commercially :P

I said otherwise :<

Plus, the RTP includes the scripts.

Scripts are part of the program's default database. Not part of the RTP. The RTP is Graphics & Audio

If anyone had bothered to read the license agreements for both the program & the RTP, it should be pretty clear that you can use the program & the RTP to make a commercial game. That includes scripts, and everything else in the database.

The only stipulation made in the license(s) is that in order to use the RTP or program for commercial games, you must have a legally purchased & "Registered" copy of the program

Yea it says so in the license agreement that you can make games for profit using the RMXP program. I mean if you bought it anyway you should be able to make profit anyway ( Assuming you bought it). So like brewmeister and marked said it is perfectly legal to charge people to download and play one of your games. Just imo you probably would not make a whole lot of profit off of it, especially if you just used standard rtp stuff unless you are amazing at everything. Not to discourage people from setting prices on their games just dont go thinking you can make thousands of dollars this way :alright:.

Hmm.. I suppose that makes sense. It's kinda' funny though; most people don't even really mean Run Time Package when they say RTP, they just mean the default "stuff" with RMXP.

Also, aren't you the admin at HBGames? We're honored to have you here. xD
