What did you grow up with?

Recommended Posts

Everyone grew up with different stuff. Those things are usually what decide your intrests when you're older.

For me it was the N64, NES, and GameBoy, mostly. Since before I can remember, We've(my brother and I) always had games like Ocarina of Time, Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2, the first 2 pkmn generations(RBY & GSC), Super Mario 64, Megaman 4, Banjo-Kazooie, Super Smash Bros., TMNT3, Star Tropics, F-Zero X, and Jet Force Gemini.

Harry Potter and Star Wars have always been my favorite movies (even though im not that into movies), and my brother and I always watched things like Pokemon, DBZ, Gundam, Yu-Yu-Hakusho, and Naruto on Toonami and stuff when i was little (well littler)

Our NES died of old age, and is probably housing spiders in our garage.

Eventually, we got a PS2, which came with two of the worst games we've ever had for it, Gran Turismo 3, and ATV Off-road Fury. We soon got Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts, Soul Caliber II, etc. We also had a few PS1 games, like Gundam Battle Assault 2, Megaman X6, and Megaman 8, but never had a PS1. When we first got GBA2 (our first PS1 game), we didn't have a PS1 memory card, so we unlocked a bunch of stuff, many times over, since we couldn't save. We did finally get one of course.

oh yea, and Legos and K'nex

Now, we have an N64, a PS2, PS3, Gamecube, Wii, Gameboy, GBC, 2 GBAs, and I have a DS lite, and a DSi. My brother has a PSP.

so yea, I grew up with a lot of video games lol. I'm sure i'm forgetting stuff though.

my brother is more into Anime, and music now than me, and i'm more into video games and stuff than him.

just thought i'd share that with the world. what about you?

when i was 4.....i would get up every morning....and watch Sleep Away Camp 4 for God knows WHY!!! Its probably the reason im so CRA-ZAAAAAYYYYY!!!

I didint have much video games to play when i was that age, not until i was 11-ish did my mother actually get me a SNES. Then a year or so later when PS 2 came out i upgraded to a N64, YAY!!! Eventually i got Gamboy Color, then a GBA, and eventually i finally added a PS1 to my sickness (resident evil, uhhhhh yeaaaaahhhhh), then later GC and finally (drum role) i got PS2!!! Infact, i still have it; ive had it for about seven years. Now i mostly play DS, the one with the "3" before the "D" :-D !!! And games on my itouch.

I grew up with the SNES. My first game was The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past. This game is totally awesome. When school starts I may replay this game in the mornings. I normally wake up around 4 or 5 am.

The following are all things I enjoyed before puberty and had heavy influences in on me as I watched/played/read them many many times. Some of the stuff came out the year I was born and a few before but was so popular I grew up with it as a small child. And some was kind of inappropriate for my age, but hey we had American satellite at the time, and TV was great for us Canadians before internet and when everyone thought we lived in Igoos.

I'm sure I forgot some, but I would bet 90% of the stuff here is 'cult classic' type stuff or really forgotten as I came from the pre internet, mid 80's marketing days where you had to read magazines, and share cassette tapes and vhs of stuff to keep informed. I tried to only put the best of the best from what I remember.

Then of course there's all the stuff during my teen years, like final fantasy 7, Unreal, Warcraft/starcraft 1, The Big Lebowski, south park (watch first episode, it was an uproar), Mallrats, Fear and Loating in Las Vegas, Dark Tower Series, Stephen Kings IT, Dragonlance, etc. So much good media in the past, much harder to wade through it nowadays.

When i was very young like 4ish i remember watching my dad playing Final Fantasy 3 on his SNES. I use to watch him play it all the time so thats why i love RPG's and video games. After a while we moved and left my dad(wont go into that and dont ask). We moved to a house in the middle of the woods with no power where i was forced to work for a long time on a farm(by my moms asshole boyfriend who she didnt even like). So till about the end of 2000(october ish) i had no video games in my life or no electronics at all.

December 25 2000 i got my first console called Playstation and my first game called Driver 2(reason it got ps1).

I played driver lots till i discovered the name of the game my dad use to play then i got addicted to every final fantasy i could get my hands on.

2001 rolls around and we got our very first computer. My friend named Jon(not Jon Bon) tells me about this awesome MMORPG called Runescape. So i tried out and got addicted to it fast(still play it to this day).

Mainly played Runescape and Final Fantasy till PS2 and Grand Theft Auto Vice city came out. I stuck with GTA and RPG's for a while. Some of the games i enjoyed were the Star Ocean series, Radiata Stories, Final Fantasy X, GTA VC, GTA SA, Metal Gear Solid 1 2 3, and Kingdomhearts.

I stayed with PS2 for a while till about 2008 when i got a PS3 and GTA4. I did lost of gaming on my PS3. Mainly RPG's and FPS's(no COD. i hate fricken cod). Then 2009 came around and i got my first gaming computer(laptop) once i went to PC gaming i never really looked back because most of it sucks. Only reason i would get a console now days is for games you cant get on PC like Final Fantasy(was huge fan till 13 came and made me no longer a fan), and star ocean(was huge fan till last hope let me down).

Now im mostly a PC gamer who enjoys games like Elder of Scrolls, Fallout, Runescape, Minecraft, and Most FPS's(not cod).

Will i ever go back to consoles? Give me a console that has full support for a keyboard and a mouse(none has yet) for FPS's and you got my attention but most likely not a buy because there to few console games i even like anymore. Lazy creators making my loved games crappy.

So there's the story of part of my life and my gaming life. Sorry about the console rant.

@pol

Dirge of Cerberus Final Fantasy VII

almost an FPS (default is 3rd person, might have a 1st person option)

Final Fantasy

Full keyboard and mouse support (yea i know, its just the game)

PS2 (maybe pc?)

just thought i'd mention it. my friend, who hates most RPGs, said that it's the only Final Fantasy he's bother playing, since it's not turn based, and its a shooter. to him, turned based games are boring, which i kinda understand (but when you grow up with them, they're awesome)

anywho, that whole no electronics thing sounds scary to me now lol

I've never heard of driver, is that a racing game or something?

about kingdom hearts. I love that series too much. I keep buying the games, even though i know its stupid. the story line is so confusing sometimes, that i feel like, if nomura explained everything in detail, he would give away some kind of secret of the universe.

@Jon Bon

F-Zero? you probably have never played X, since it's N64, but my brother and i (he's 24 and has moved out) played F-Zero X like all day today. that game brings back awesome memories biggrin.png

@Jon and RKO

A Link to the Past? huh, i need to get into 2D zelda games, people are always talking about games like this. maybe i'll download something on my Wii one of these days.

I realize i had kind of a luxury, with my brother being practically my best friend, and having a relatively awesome childhood (which is coming to a close, since i'll be an adult in december)

and has anyone heard of Jetforce Gemini? that game would've been my Halo if i was super into shooters. other than Metroid Prime, its the only FPS i love (even though, like Dirge of Cerberus, it's mostly 3rd person) most shooters have real guns, and show their irl names. in Jetforce Gemini, the weapons were stuff like Pistol, Machine Gun, Plasma Shotgun, Cluster Bombs, etc. there were no clever names, and it made it very easy to tell them apart for me. real gun names usually confuse me, and i dont know what they look like lol.

@pol again

you had COD? ive played Black Ops, and modern warfare 2, and both were ok, but i dont like them enough to buy them. again, not that into shooters.

oh, almost forgot, We also played DBZ Budokai 1, 2, 3, and Tenkaichi 1 and 2

I love talking about games that grew up with btw :D

but i hate it when i lose an awesome game, and years later, its nowhere to be found. I miss some of those games :(

some of the games i grew up with though, i didnt even own. my best friend owned them, like Banjo-Tooie, Donkey Kong 64, some weird Digimon fighting game, etc.

I do think i missed out on a lot of stuff though, like most of the Final Fantasy games.

@ Bob

I definitely did play that for N64. I also emulated when ZNES was brand new, so I was luckily playing the translated japanese games as they were being fan translated back in the day.

I never mentioned N64 because I played that as a teenager, not as a youth. If I add even just the video games that influenced me from say 4-20 I would be here all day. There is just too much classic stuff nowadays, not many are willing to try it either.

I read through everything everyone else put, and yup, it was all mainstream. I would love to see people influenced from something that didn't get splashed all over TV as a kid.

Records (old school CDs for you youngsters) of bands from Abba to Zeppelin (Led) blaring in the background while I played with GI Joes, lit my sister's barbies on fire, playing my Atari and watching Wonder Years, and Conan The Barbarian on a 20" black and white tv (sometimes color when you slapped it real hard) that had 13 channels.

My first game I really, really got into was Phantasy Star 2, and from there it led to Shining Force and the rest is history. I've been an RPG nut since.

Back in the early 90s, I was introduced to a different type of cartoon than I'd normally seen, and I've been in love with the series Macross or Robotech ever since. It was that show that made me want to be a pilot.

OH! OH! Anyone remember playing a game, getting stuck, and having to figure it out for yourself, or ask a friend who MIGHT have done it? God I miss those days.

Hey Bob, that Digimon type game.. would that have been Monster Rancher? For the PS1? The one that you could get monsters out of random CDs? That game was... interesting. And fun.

I grew up with a commodore 64. I played Zork quite a bit, but never did beat it. I also played this pac-man rip off called cosmic cruncher.

The SNES holds a very special place in my heart. Super Mario Land and Zelda A Link to the Past rocked my world when I was a kid. And then the 64 came out and Zelda Ocarina of Time blew my mind! I spent hours upon hours of my time playing that amazing game. I still play SNES to this day because it brings me back to my childhood. Although I'd never wish to return there it's always nice to reminisces about the simple times of yore.
