Welcome to Game Dev Unlimited

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

Due to time restraints I have opted to skip the testing phase of GDU and go live right away. It's a bit of a risk but hopefully one that pays off. Unfortunately I cannot spare much more time until November which is when my exams finish up.

It's really important to note that this is a premature release and there are going to be a lot of bugs around. The main menu is also a bit bare and there are tons of features in the works but not ready to go live. As I've said a few times, try to see the potential. The GDU system is primed for speedy application development which means sections such as the games section can be developed really quickly. As a reminder of what's planned for the future, check this out http://www.gdunlimit...ssion-statement

Getting the forums to work is a real mission and quite a unique challenge. While there are going to be bugs and things not operating around the forums, the rest of GDU should operate much more smoothly because it will all be built using the GDU system, unlike the forums which is built into it.

So the plan is this: work my way through user reported bugs and at the end of November when the forum is a much more stable state, begin work on the core features of the GDU concept such as the dashboard, games section and new profiles.

Also note that this is not the final design or UI. I've spent most of my time on integration and getting functionality working. The design is almost definitely going to change.

As for letting people know about GDU, the plan is this: Wait a week or so for bug reports. It's essential things work so that when people come they want to stay. After that I will make announcements on the facebook and twitter. As for bulk emailing our members, right now I'm thinking I ought to wait until more sections of GDU are opened. Right now we're mainly a forum, and there's a couple million of those around.

I would really appreciate bug reports. Just poor them into this topic. I will try my best with the little time I have. I mainly want to get the most sever issues fixed first and just ensure everything is working as it should be.

The is the first step of a new era for RMXPU/GDU :)

EDIT: Also now that the email system is working, I recommend existing users change your preferences to what you want to be emailed for (eg, replies to your topics): http://www.gdunlimited.net/forums/index.php?app=core&module=usercp&tab=core&area=notifications

The site looks amazing (green's my favorite color). LOVE the logo, too.

Since there might be a UI change, can we have themes? Cause I really like this one. Just a suggestion. I know you work hard so I don't want to overload you.

Glad you like the design, but disappointed at the same time that's the only difference GDU appears to be right now :(

That reminds me, to whoever posted on the facebook page: I deleted the comment because I want to wait a week or so until I make an official announcement. I said that in the first post, I know its a bit long and people probably skim it. The reason is because I want to get rid of as many bugs as possible then announce it on social media.

Definitely. I've got plans more for design tweaks rather than themes. For example, choose your default colour, change the pagination style, etc. I will also have features for setting the layout width so that people with larger screens can go above the 980px. Right now I'm thinking of the more points you have the more stuff you can unlock, including unlocking the ability to tweak the GDU design.

I'm glad I've got your approval for the logo :D

Right now of course i can only afford time to bug fixes until November, last exam on the 9th :D Gotta study all day every day till then, I've got an insane workload for uni not to mention work.

I may as well mention, this is so far is probably 15-20% of what I plan do to with GDU.

Well it is awesome to see it live. I've been a fan of it since day one and some years ago when I first started using. (That's right most you members are behind ;)) Anyways I can't wait to see the rest of the site being done and being able to change the colors! I WANT BLUE! :D

Look at this place now. Been gone for a few months and come to check it out and hit with the new design. Not to shabby Marked. I like the logo.

Thanks Noob :)

Mmm yeah a few things have changed. But right now, this is is like 10% of the planned functionality of GDU. All this is is a forum - like you and others have said - its just a new design right now.

However, we're currently on the "GDU" system. For example, the 'forums' in the URL is a controller of the GDU system which loads IPB into it. Thus, no such "forums" directory exists, its called something else.

The system enables me to make some really cool applications with full integration: the chat and member map are examples.

The design is also going to change to something with more personality.

Thats the plans anyway :)

I was thinking it has to much white and green going on.
