Cool project.. But I am most concerned about your interior mapping. You've used the wall tiles all wrong.. There is an autotile you are supposed to fill the map with and then put your walls down according to the way your house/map is supposed to look. You should totally check out some mapping tutorials when you get the time, they should benefit you.. Maybe check out willowsidhe's youtube tutorials(http://www.youtube.com/user/willowsidhe). That aside, pretty cool project: Keep it up! :)

How graphical would these animations need to be? I'm a bit rusty with spriting so I need to know my limits and what not.

Hm, well.. It really does depend on the size for me. With a minimum sized map, it usually takes me about 10-20 minutes. Any larger though maybe 30-hour. And sometimes it could even take me a week like you.

Actually, I have reworked A LOT of the story. It is still very dark but a lot of character bio's have been done over. Skelly is a girl, I just typed stupid. I will be updating this project with the new story, characters, and a bunch of other things, including a new feature: The Karma System. Here is a screenshot of a Boss Fight:
