Actually no, you do not need RPG Maker XP, RPG Maker VX, or even Game Maker to participate in the contest. You simply need any game making software that supports Tile Set construction (see full list of game making software here; not all are tile based and some are free or paid). Now if you own RMXP then obviously you can only try and go for the RPG Maker VX license. Now as for Game Maker, yes it does have default resources they are just downloaded separately.

RMXP Community, After some thought I have decided on a Contest that the winners (2 of them) will be rewarded a free legal license of RPG Maker XP and RPG Maker VX. I had to make sure I picked something challenging, but also that any one who owns RPG Maker XP, VX, or Game Maker could participate in. This contest is a form of Mapping Skills and Creative Skills. If you enter (simply reply to this topic and say which Software you are trying to win) you will be required to make a map in the shape/form of some type of creature using the default tile sets of the software (recoloring is okay). An example of this would be like a Pikachu Island (in the shape and minor details). Below is my example (a Horned Slime Island; A Slime I created for this example based off Drake Slime from Dragon Quest series): This is simply an example; with more time I'm sure I could make it damn good. Download Example File: here Rules 1) Must be made with Tile Sets in any game making software that supports Tile Sets. 2) You must provide a working demo of said map. 3) To Enter simply reply to this topic by saying what Software you are trying to win. 4) If you already own one or both of the software offered please do not enter. 5) Partners are okay, but it should be someone who is not entering the contest or requesting the same software. 6) Limit two entries per person. Enter Start: 17 AUG 2011 Enter End: 31 AUG 2011 *The length of time people have to join/sign up for contest. Submissions In By: 25 SEP 2011 Last Submission Excepted: 28 SEP 2011 *Submissions will be sent to Noob Saibot, by PM. DO NOT POST SUBMISSIONS in this topic. Winner Announced: 01 OCT 2011 This is Legal and has been approved by rpgmakerweb.com! v/Respectfully, Noob Saibot/Kage Kazumi (P12 Leader)

Like the new stuff. Jack Sparrow looks damn close to the real deal; in my opinion.

Update, New Count: RMXP--- 4 RMVX--- 3 Also I have decided to place a time limit on this topic. The community has 7 days from 15 AUG 2011 to vote, debate, etc. The topic will then be closed and moved and a new topic will appear announcing the software to be used. I have set this topic to close automatically on 22 AUG 2011. v/Respectfully, Noob Saibot/Kage Kazumi (P12 Leader)

Update, I have finally figured out the type of contest we will be doing. I will make a new post with full details and examples soon. However, all I will say for now is if you have RMXP or RMVX OR any Game Making Software that uses a Tile Set you will be able to enter the contest. v/Respectfully, Noob saibot/Kage Kazumi (P12 Leader)

Well as of now the votes total is: RMXP--- 3 RMVX--- 3 Tie! Plus I still have my contest as well where a License for RMXP and VX is up for grabs. Not to mention there is nothing wrong with acquiring the software you need by other means as long as you delete from your computer or buy it later. I did this with RMVX and then bought it, same with RMXP when it was released.

Bob423, What software you do or don’t have doesn’t matter in this case. Simply, because logically you can do just about anything to help contribute without needing either software or one or the other: 1) Graphic-- a person doesn’t need either software to contribute graphics be they original creations or found on the internet. All they need to know is what style the art is for each software. Finding resources works the same way: RMVX Resources or RMXP Resources in Google can find graphics and all without the person needing to own the software. 2) Events-- even Events can be replicated from one software to another. It is not hard, just time consuming. So, you don’t even need one or the other to create Events as you can make them in one, and they can be converted to work in another. 3) Mapping-- with some simple editing even title sets can be created in either software (more limited in VX) and replicated to another. 4) Media-- sound and music also do not require you to own either software to contribute. 5) Scripts-- you do not need either software to suggest an already pre-made scripts. As for creating an all-new script then yes you would need one of the software, but case in point you don’t need either to suggest a script, thus contributing your input as a member. 6) Testing-- you do not need either software to test/play them either and Beta Testing is contributing as well. 7) Writing-- you don’t need either to help with story, plot, characterization, etc. Overall no matter how you slice it, it is not important that a member owns the software to be used. v/Respectfully, Noob Saibot/Kage Kazumi (P12 Leader)

What features do you look for in game making software?
Noob Saibot replied to Marked's topic in General Game Development
That's the issue. Look at game maker, yes you have to re-download new versions, but once you buy it you get new updates at no cost. RPG Maker Series, just bust out new software with limited features, removal of features, etc. -
You could also try HTML Kit (which is also free).

It's like you read my mind.

RMXP Community, This is the issue that comes about when doing a community project and is the reason why I said comments such as, “I do not own it,” will be ignored. Because you do not need either software to help contribute to the project. v/Respectfully, Noob Saibot/Kage Kazumi (P12 Leader) It is not meant as to see which is better, but to gather the opinion of why each individual would rather use RMXP over RMVX (for example). Don't look at it as a Pro or Con instead list everything you can do in RMXP and RMVX with out using a script. You will find the differences are quite big.

RMXPU, So I am rather busy (working on 3 websites, writing, and freelancing) at the moment and don't have much time to work on the sprites I need for a Fan Based game I have been meaning to make. I know fan games are some what frowned upon, but the last one I made, back in 2005 won me a new PS2 (when it was new). It has been 6 years since I have made game and I'm just not in the mood for a custom game. Plus a fan one will allow me to bust it out relatively easy and quickly. The Request Style--- RPG Maker VX Total Sprites Needed--- 5 Total Sprites By Gender--- 3 Males | 2 Females Type--- Character Sheet/Set Reference Images Hero 1 (DQ8) Hero 2(DQM) Brbara Patty Pisaro I appreciate any help. v/Respectfully, Gaara

I remember reading that post. I wonder how I forgot it...I must be getting old.

Do you know how wrong this statement is? Nice Pro and Con list, but you failed to mention which engine you would like us to use.

I only know of one official sample game. The RPG Maker series don't fit in this category. -
What is the Worst Strategy Guide you have ever read/used for a video game? Dragon Quest 8, has to be the worst. It lacks need to know information. I mean it's bad when you have to put the book down and search online...

Welcome to RMXP Unlimited, where we members try not to be too active. Anyway, I have not heard of them and I listen to everything, but Heavy Metal and Oprah.

RMXPU Community, The first order of P12 is to as a community decides what engine should be used to create the game. Feel free to post your Pro’s and Con’s for using RPG Maker VX or RPG Maker XP. However, please keep in mind that the engine needs to be readily available to all members so for this reason P12 is limited to RMXP or RMVX. *This is not a POLL because I won't to know why you want to use it; simply saying, "RPG Maker VX, because I own it," is not good enough and will be ignored and not count toward a vote! Also I have decided to place a time limit on this topic. The community has 7 days from 15 AUG 2011 to vote, debate, etc. The topic will then be closed and moved and a new topic will appear announcing the software to be used. I have set this topic to close automatically on 23 AUG 2011. v/Respectfully, Noob Saibot/Kage Kazumi (P12 Leader)

Not quite the replies I was looking for. This topic is not a debate topic on what the project should use, will use, might use, etc. It is more or less an information topic. ~CLOSED v/Respectfully, Kage Kazumi/Noob Saibot (P12 Leader)

RMXPU Community, So for those who do not know I am now also a Project Leader for Project 2012 and the first thing you will take note that I removed (moved) posts that I felt were no longer needed for this particular forum. It was scattered information and ideas with some questions thrown in here and there. The first order of this project is organization so I removed all old topics into the sub-forum labeled Archive. This forum will also have a set standard rule for any member posting a topic question (see below). The second order of this new Re-Make of Project 2012 is actually getting the community involved. Well reading a few of the old topics I did not feel as if the community was involved enough in some of the decision making for this community project. That’s why I have decided to start from scratch because if this is to be a true community project it should have that aspect right from the start that the community had a decision in major roles of the development process of this project. Let’s start by discussing a few new ground rules and what you can expect from the new Project 2012: 1) Though this project has Leader(s), their word is not final unless it is to break a tie or conflicting argument or idea for Project 2012. 2) Project Leader(s) will derive a variety of concepts for the community to choose from and allow them to vote on which concept should be used in Project 2012 (e.g. story and plot). 3) If a concept is submitted by a Leader for the community to vote and debate, and the community fails to give any incite the leader has the right to make their own decision. 4) All QUESTIONS regarding Project 2012 (or P12 for short) should have a pre-fix of [QUES], which simply means Question. All topic questions not following this prefix will not be answered and soft deleted (only MODs can see it)as well as moved to the archive. These questions will be answered as best we can and then moved to the archive. One of the Project Leader’s will make a FAQ topic and link to all archived questions for easy finding. Now here is a list of up-coming P2012 topics that the community will debate and ultimately decide on some of the aspects of P2012. Please remember that I chose to start over because the first attempt failed at truly involving the community so this will be your chance to voice your thoughts and ideas in these topics when they have been made. 1) Engine--- RMXP or RMVX 2) Game Title 3) Story and Plot Concepts 4) Main Hero Gender (may depend on #3) 5) Hero(s) history/Plot and information (may depend on #3 and #4) 6) Starting Intro 7) Menu System 9) Battle System 10) Other Scripts Used v/Respectfully Noob Saibot/Kage Kazumi (P-2012 Leader)

You might not find to many members here who are members their...maybe if it was a Indie Game Development site.

Should Enterbrain make an official RPG Maker forums?
Noob Saibot replied to FranklinX's topic in General Game Development
That's how RMXP Underground died. The owner got tired and bored with RMXP and shut his site down and was never seen on an RMXP/VX community again. Plus SephirothSpawn one of the most respected Script makers is no longer active on any RMXP/VX community. In fact he may have moved to EGM as on one community he says he loves EGM. The only thing that lives on for these two is the scripts they made. -
I even created my own Kaiser version Male template; I call it Mini Kaiser and it is like one head higher then the normal RTP. I'll show it after I fine tune it and make an example character.

I'm not feeling it as a RPG game music.
