Noob Saibot 38 Report post Posted October 23, 2010 So I bought a PS3 well away from home. I was told (and saw on the net) that PS1 games could not be played on it; only PS2 games. So well messing around in the PS3 set up area I noticed I had a choice to create a PSX memory slot. So I made one and threw in Legend of Dragoon (PSX) and it works fine. This is great news for me since The Legend of Dragoon is my Fav RPG.
Wyzrd 12 Report post Posted October 23, 2010 It depends on what model of the PS3 you bought?
synchronicity 6 Report post Posted October 23, 2010 I was told the same thing, but I have a friend who has a PS3 that can play PSX games on it. As the previous poster mentioned, it depends on the model. I think the original models allowed you to play PSX games on it, but the newer models did not. Personally I think all the models of it should, because some of the games for PSX were still pretty awesome. That's great that you lucked out and got one that'll play them! ;D
Wyzrd 12 Report post Posted October 23, 2010 The older fat model PS3 will play some PSX games maybe. They will play some PS2 games without a problem. The only PS3 that plays all PSX and PS2 games is the original fat 60GB modeled PS3. They used hardware emulation instead of software emulation so they play the games without any problems. I know because I own a 60GB model PS3. The new slim PS3 will not play any PS2 games or PSX games.
Noob Saibot 38 Report post Posted October 24, 2010 I believe mine is a newer model because it is 160gb and I saw it first in a Game Informer article about PS3 release 160gb and 300+gb PS3.
Polraudio 122 Report post Posted October 24, 2010 1st PS3's with 4 USB ports and memory card slots can play PSX and PS2 games. All PS3's after that can play PSX games and not PS2 games. Why? Well the 1st PS3's had the PS2's chip called Emotion Engine in to to process PS2 Games and the newer ones dont have that chip.
Arkbennett 16 Report post Posted October 25, 2010 It's as he says, all PS3 models can play PS1 games. The Emotion Engine was available to the original 60 Gig for hardware emulation, but was removed to reduce the costs of the Playstation, apparently Sony thinks people are buying PS3's only for PS3 games, and not as a method of preserving the life expectancy of their PS2 games as well. Anyways, they included the PS2's chipset in the 80 Gig model they released and had you download PS2 Emulation Software from PSN, however, they removed that completely in all of the later "Slim" design. All is not loss for PS2 people like myself, Sony file a patent for some type of Emulation using the Playstation's Hardware. Though, I don't know much about it, or all the technicalities. So I won't pretend too.
Kiriashi 117 Report post Posted October 25, 2010 Rayman and Spyro were awesome PSX games.. Though I don't really like any other playstation 1 2 or 3 games.
withinsin 0 Report post Posted December 2, 2010 :biggrin_002: LOD had a lot of unique aspects to it that at the time made it almost irresistable to play non-stop. Still to this day, I pop it in the system for some good memories. A little off topic, but has anyone ever seen a script for LOD? I think it'd be awesome to make characters from my rpg transform for the simple fact that it's awesome.
evil sgt death 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2010 Slightly off original topic but relevant to some of the replies: Sony are now releasing Bravia TVs with in built DVD players that also have a PS2 built in. So there I still a chance to replay all your old games. You just have to fork out for a new TV first!!
