I just started Decrepit Progeny. Looking good so far. I'm not too into RMVX or Ace games, for whatever reason--maybe I just haven't played enough of them? But this might turn out to be one I really enjoy. :)

Actually, I checked my version and it says I have 1.02a. So, 1.02a on Windows 8. -
Update, since I haven't edited my first post since 18 December, even though I said I would quickly. Just came down from Christmas highs, spent some time in Las Vegas before the holidays. I ended up staying longer than I thought I would, and I got back only in time to join the festivities. As a result, I got nothing done. Will be updating this at some point before the weekend is over. I'll be rechecking my anatomy, since it never looks good enough to pass for decent. D:

What is a fair price for custom graphics?
GermanyXItaly1000 replied to FranklinX's topic in General Game Development
I haven't paid artists for graphics before, but I know someone who does. I can give you an approximation what they're currently paying. For the artist who does character graphics: I don't know if you want busts or facesets, but the maker of this game is using facesets. They have about 10 MCs and some side charactesr. For each character's package of facesets (includes 5-8 expressions), they pay $20. About four dollars or less for one expression. Considering that the artist is redoing all the facesets right now thanks to two years of improvement, upgrades free of charge, that's pretty cheap. For the artist who does "screenshots": They're pretty good quality. I can say with certainty that the person who draws the screencaps certainly utilizes a paint program like Paint Tool SAI well. Good lighting, shading, etc. Anatomy is fantastic, a more "advanced" anime style. Not this type of anime: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ovZSOxWwh2c/0.jpg I'm talking this type of anime: http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2012/337/5/c/2_3_by_fischkraut-d5my09i.jpg (Best example of shading and colouring I could find. They do complete, detailed backgrounds for these if necessary, and multiple characters--most I've seen is up to five characters in one screenshot.) This artist gets paid $150 for the entire bundle of screenshots. There's no predetermined number, as far as I know, but I'm thinking (averaged) 1 in each chapter. There's 32 chapters in the game last I heard. Less than five dollars a screenshot--again, considering the quality, that's a great price. I should mention that this artist is also doing the main battler graphics that include characters used in screenshots. That way the screenshots match up with certain characters. I know there's an artist who's doing the remaining battler graphics and whatever other miscellaneous items there might be in the game, but I haven't heard anything about their prices. (They're a close friend of the maker, so they might or might not be doing it free of charge.) Last I talked with the maker, the overall price of the art for that project is $350 dollars. Surf around on deviantART and pitch your idea to the artists there. There's a lot of quality work presented by fantastic artists there. Some charge a lot, some charge less. Let me talk about projects that don't pay their artists for one reason or another. (Currently, this is my team's project.) This doesn't pertain to your game, but humour me. A couple years ago, I discussed my fangame with friends on deviantART. Since we were close and shared interests the ones I talked to wanted to help out for free. We showed the idea to some other avid fans we weren't close to, and since we presented a complete plot and some interesting character designs, most of them were glad to contribute to the project. Good quality and all, free of charge. You probably wouldn't get this with other fandoms, but the project we're doing is based off an anime that has a unique and expansive fanbase. Very nice people, and with tons of talent. Now, about that--never underestimate the stress of rl. A lot of the people who wanted to contribute were/are in high school or university. Their time is strictly limited. We've had about three artists drop out for various reasons. Several users deactivated their accounts without letting us know. This is fine by us; the artists and musicians involved with our team are aware that they're not being paid. It's out duty to make sure they know this. Because we're a nonprofit, non-paying project, it's our responsibility to give and fully inform them of their right to drop out anytime they want and/or get work done on their own time. Meaning it'll most likely take ages longer than a paid project. But let me stress: by paying your artists, you don't necessarily secure their roles. The maker of the paying project I was talking about had a screenshot artist that dropped out after a while due to rl restrictions. They still took some portion of their pay, since they did their job and did it well. (The new artist still had to redo the screenshots to match with their style, though.) But like I said, paying doesn't guarantee you'll have absolutely no problems in the long run. What you do guarantee is more dedication, efficiency, and professionalism. -
You can say that again. It's totally different from when I joined a year and a half ago. I'm pretty glad I decided to come on here more recently; there aren't as many active members as I seem to remember, but I still love it :D

I'm still using RMXP. Two years, man. Looking forward to being able to move on from my current project someday and picking up Unity or something. Or at least learn Ruby so I can actually do more with the engine. If purple's an option in the customizer... don't mind me... I'll be taking that.

72 Hour Game Jam Contest?
GermanyXItaly1000 replied to David Johnston's topic in Community Contests & Events
The Hero's Journey guide is pretty wide open for interpretation. You could do a lot with it, which is why it shouldn't be one of the only rules. I'd prefer a limit on maps or something, since all the games have to be around the same size/time and all. With the Monomyth, you could create a game practically the size of Mad Father and still have it fulfill all the requirements. Hero goes on a journey to save/do one person/thing, ends up running into tons of obstacles, getting help from others, and building their character, etc. So I'm all for any ideas in relation to the story, but it should fit the time/size limits. Although what I'd prefer is no or less limits on the story and creativity, since the "one-minded quest" idea can take a long time to flesh out and build decently. The Hero's Journey guide also has a lot of extra obstacles that I'd rather not create for the player in what I assume will be a short game. -

Sound continues to play when clicking out of game. How to stop this?
GermanyXItaly1000 posted a question in Support
I know this is a feature that comes with RMXP. Sadly, it's one that I do not want. I've spent a lot of time mixing the proper sounds and such for the end of my game's first episode, and I want it to play until the Wait function runs out, followed by a command to stop the sound. It works--if the player doesn't click away from the screen. If the player does do something like that, then the Wait function will be interrupted, and then the sound will loop again until they click back into the screen and the wait command does run out. Which sounds horrible, no way to end a first episode. A lot of the game's music is designed to work this way. The BGM/BGS changes with time, which means I'll be running into pretty bad problems in the future if I can't find a way out of this. The only thing I've thought of so far is to use a full screen script, but a lot of the people I've talked to who have actually played the game don't really like full screen games. So that's also a potential problem. I would like to actually be able to make the sound pause upon clicking out of the window. But as it's part of RMXP and (I assume) not something that's found in the scripts, I'm guessing you'd have to rewrite a large portion of the engine's sound system itself... but I'm hoping against all odds that there's a script out there that will fix this. -

Wait, so it happens in Windows 7 too? I don't think Flash and Javascript were related to something like that. My RPG Maker XP has never given me any such problem, so I'm going to download and try out the new version and see if anything happens on my Windows 8. If that doesn't give me anything, I'll go back to forum searching. EDIT: I downloaded what I think is the official version from the RPG Maker website. Guess what happened--I opened it and had a bright blue as the background. Messing around with the custom transparency options did nothing for me, except it changed the colour of the area outside my map to the colour. But not in the column where the tileset was. It remained bright blue the whole time. When I restarted RMXP after saving the custom transparency setting, the colour turned from bright blue to dark blue. I ran it as admin, made sure all my graphics drivers were updated, and re-installed. Got me nowhere. Every time I open it, it's all different shades of blue. Uninstalled the new version and ran my old version, the one that still took serial numbers. It ran perfectly, white transparent background. I did the same with the version in Pol's link after uninstalling the newest version. It told me I had an outdated version of RPG Maker RTP (so my version is older), but after installing the new RTP I found that Pol's version worked perfectly. White transparent background. Only the new one is giving me problems. So I would try completely uninstalling that one first and then trying the older one again. -

That sounds pretty terrible... you can try to make a copy of your game folder and then open to copy to see if anything bad happens. I'll surf around for some new information, but I'm not sure if I can find anything -

72 Hour Game Jam Contest?

I think that earlier in the topic, they mentioned that RPG Maker XP or VX/VX Ace will be what we're using. But yeah, some official rules would be good. -

72 Hour Game Jam Contest?
GermanyXItaly1000 replied to David Johnston's topic in Community Contests & Events
Point taken, Mage. I'll throw some caution to the wind and stick with free music this time. I'm not sure how many people here can sprite, but I know for sure that I'm useless at it. I either take a very long time to make something decent or take a very short time to come out with something... barely recognisable. Haha, that's probably just me, though. It would be a learning experience for sure, though. Time constraints + need for creating my own sprites would churn out some interesting results. Also, about scripts. How are those going to be implemented? Eg, the ones that are available for public use. That fits with what you said about the resources, but I just wanted to put it out there since I'm heavily dependent on others' scripts. (I really need to learn how to script... maybe I can find some time to start in the next couple of weeks.) Since I don't know how well everyone else is off making their own resources, I'll wait to hear more on this. But my winter holidays have finally started, so I'm free to make a small game anytime. -
old RPG Maker XP install file
GermanyXItaly1000 replied to Metaclaw's topic in General Game Development
I'm lucky then, my XP looks like it's running fine on 64-bit system, Windows 8. I did find this quote on a Steam thread: "This new version should work on 64 bit systems. The offline version should have a new DRM and publisher that improved RMXP's compatibility. The old one was distributed by Protexis, the new publisher is Degica." Link to the thread: http://steamcommunity.com/app/235900/discussions/2/630800446045928412/?insideModal=1. It was posted January 1 of 2014. But Metaclaw said she has the "new version," which is what she's running on Windows 8. I'm assuming that's the one that's causing problems? But the only thing I can say is... "When in doubt, re-install." -
Making items unusable on a certain class/character
GermanyXItaly1000 replied to Some1's question in Support
From what I can recall about the layout of the item tab in the database, I can't see any way you could limit the item to a certain person. I think Mage is right. Script is probably the way to go for this.
