Hey guys, I'm taking the unusual step of showing you something that isn't even near finished. The reason is probably that I'm rather close to failing uni this year, pretty down on motivation at the moment, and its late on a sunday, so in case I decided to get my act together I won't be finishing this too soon :P First off, this is all about the concept not the design. I messed around with the category view, but aside from that there's no styling to it whatsoever. So don't comment on how bad it looks.... What I would like you guys to do is mess around with it. Make as many tutorials as you want and just play around with the system. I don't care what you upload or type. To do that, there is a 'Create' link on the following page: http://www.rmxpunlimited.net/component/tutorials/?view=category When you upload media, you paste the code into the main text box, and it will show up in your tutorial. I'm sure that's not too hard to figure out. Here's an example of what you can already make with it: http://www.rmxpunlimited.net/component/tutorials/index.php?option=com_tutorials&view=display&id=1 Did I mention it isn't even near finished? Suggestions on features would be nice :)

Ahhh I See :D Thanks guys!! As soon as I can go retrieve my laptop I'll get me some win7. :alright:
-
yes of course. Thats why there is a system to prevent bots. Bots will submit any form they can...

Thanks not the spirit, Broken Messiah! Just because its likely we'll fail doesn't mean we shouldn't try. I was going to make an announcement topic and advertise it, but I was waiting for it to kick off a bit more. After I made the page, it really died down. We only got 13 signatures in the last 11 days. http://www.rmxpunlimited.net/petition

You remember the exact number? lol. I tested it, i think most of them are actually working... You posted a link to the gallery. May I please have the link to the album?

Ah yeah, mapping would probably not be appropriate. The trick here is that we need to create a new type of page that is more than just "Do this", because that could simply be added at the bottom of the tutorial. This type of thing needs various elements... For example: 1. details/explanation of the exercise (possible screenies/video - needs to be very precise) 2. tutorials/readings/references needed to complete the tutorial 3. hints (I'm thinking reveal more and more detailed hints in case they get stuck) 4. reveal the answer of how to actually achieve the exercise 5. a yes/no button on whether the person successfully completed the exercise, showing if its too hard or not So thats how we could take a simple exercise beyond a 1-line challenge at the bottom of a tut. And what's also important are that excercises be kept as much as possible within the scope of the original tutorial, but balanced with what they're expected to know before the tutorial anyway.

Spambots don't usually set photos, or make posts without links or advertising something. But I'm going to close this topic because the posts are becoming slightly on the chatty/spammy side... I'm sure MrMistoffelees won't mind too much.

Some of them do some of them don't. They need to rebuilt. If I try to rebuild them all the script stops at 700, so that won't work. I thought I went through every category (and album) and rebuilt all of them in the gallery. If you link me to the category/album then that I'll rebuild them.

I discovered it right at the end of 2005. As hard as it may be to believe, I was really into making games back then. I used Game Maker, and I was pretty good at it I think. I found rm95 on one of my older brothers CDs, and decided to google to see if there had been an upgrade. ] From making a DBZ game in rm95 to testing RPG Maker XP for the first time was amazing. I liked it so much I can still remember the night I first tested it more than 5 years ago. In fact I can remember what I did that day, though I remember certain random events in some detail, I'm weird like that. What followed was joining my first RMXP forum, Creation Asylum, fulfilling RavenClaws resource request topic and thinking this isn't a bad deal, and creating my own RMXP forum. :D

Wait, watching it is illegal??? That's a ridiculous law. Here you can't buy smokes until you're 18, but there is no legal age limit for smoking. I'd imagine its similar for porn, at least I'm certain buying it you have to be 18. You can get done for underage drinking though, which is just a slap on the wrist. In NZ we're considered adults at 18 ;) Only thing we can't do is go to casinos, the age limit being 20. Being charged as an adult at 18 for criminal offenses but not being able to purchase alcohol until 21 seems a bit hypocritical to me. I'm going to see if I can find the laws in NZ relating 'watching' pornography... but I really don't think there are laws on it, except on child porn.

Ok guys, next week I'm going to pick up my laptop, so long as nothing fell it on during a recent quake (which occurred 1 hour before I was supposed to pick it up). Apparently they loaded on windows XP for me, which I like. I've been using XP for like 7 years and I'm sort of reluctant to move... I guess that makes me sound old :pinch: But I'm just really skeptical of anything that Microsoft is actually any good. I mean these are the people who made IE6. How do you lose a browser monopoly when your browser comes default with your software? So yeah, is windows 7 any good? Better than my beloved XP?

This idea sounds really interesting. But I don't quite get what you mean by exercise. Do you mean sort of like a test/question? We tell them what we want them to create.. oh, and we can give them readings by 'attaching' existing tutorials. I have to make this.... lol. In terms of a support group, sure we could create a specific user group for the purpose of helping out with exercises. But what I've been planning from the beginning is commenting system. I try to integrate things as much as possible because we are using 2 different types of software for the site and forum, so I'm thinking of replicating the topic-view for the comments to make it look more sort of professional. The point of the application is to replace the tutorials forum and make the content more accessible, so I'd like them posted in as much as topics. I kind of replicated it in the scripts archives: http://www.rmxpunlimited.net/resources/scripts/item/party-changing-system?category_id=12

Wait, what are these categories for exactly? Where does uploading resources to a website come into play? And I'm not a joomla salesmen  first of all its opensource, and 2nd I just know how to use it and wanted to help

If we get 10 of you then that'd be no problem. The 2 nominated really are the standouts... but I think I'll nominate Polraudio too for activity and contribution.

@someoneyouknow: thank you :) Haha it looks a wee bit different now. I couldnt stand the form styles so I changed them, but no other designs have been made @Pol: I hope so... but I'm way behind in my studies and when i get some free time I have opened up this. So far its going pretty well and I'm suprised how easy and quickly I was able to throw it together. But I had some big ideas which i wish i had to time to fulfill....

Haha yeah we kinda did hijack it, but these days you just gotta let good discussion flow whenever you get it. But this particular topic has definitely inspired me... You know kellessdee, all this time I had no idea you were a scripter. I haven't been reading topics on the forum as I've been flat out with uni work, I really can't remember the last time we had a member join who was decent enough at it to call themselves a scripter. After I left this topic last night I started to think about how to achieve the multi-tutorial system we were talking about. First of all I think there is a major need for it - the easy content is to access the more people you're going to get reading it. Ok so here's what I came up with: you can create a tutorial or you can create a catalog. So for example you have several tutorials on how to map a forest, or some other common theme. What you can then do is create a catalog and assemble those tutorials into the catalog. So then in the tutorials listing you have access to these catalogs. I havent come up with how they will work yet... but basically its the same tutorials but viewing them together... for example, you could have them in pages. Or that catalog acts as a category and you have them listed like the other tutorials but they are grouped together. I hope this isn't too hard to envision... Now I'm thinking of different types of tutorials to incorporate reference pages... too many ideas! :P

@kellessdee: I don't want to make one of those posts where I dissect everything you said though I could very easily do, but those kind of posts are annoying :P (obviously I cut your quote there). I would be more inclined to join the knowledge part with the application part. So when you say this does x, its followed by a snippet of code that demonstrates x's application. But that's not exactly relevant to this discussion, its just tutorial technique really. In terms of syntax how about we include a reference section in the tutorial and then whenever we access something from the database, we could comment above saying refer to the reference section. This has given me a lot of ideas for my tutorial application. It could start out with a table of contents and include a series of tutorials by different authors, because of course a lot of stuff is already been written up over the years. o each tutorial/section has its own page. So we're sort of looking at a mini cataloge of tutorials and then inserting custom ones to complete the overall scheme of the tutorial. Oh and yes I thought he meant just a battle system when I wrote that post.

I think that would be way too complicated. I have a little experience in coding in php having wrote a few components on this site, but I never really read any tutorials. What I think is far more important than reading how to do things is tweaking, experimenting and taking on small projects than you have on idea how to do, and slowly accumulate your knowledge. I find reading tutorials really pointless and I think they should only demonstrate a small specific method of doing something and you should then carry that knowledge/technique into your much larger current project. But we all have different learning techniques. I kinda think your idea is impossible... sorry :P Basically what you're after is right there is the help file which is very heavily neglected. That will teach you the basics and then run into RGSS rather in-depth. I think all that really is needed is the actual battle system coding tutorial, all the rest is out there. We could actually do your idea by compiling existing tutorials, but I'm not aware of any battle system tutorials. So really its not impossible. But from my own programming experience I think you're going to have to be pretty decent and written your own things before coding a battle system. Coincidentally before writing this post I was working a tutorials system that I think makes writing tutorials a lot more easy... so if anyone writes the tutorial, they should definitely PM me :D

So how do you make a tutorials component? There aren't exactly any defined parts of information you can lob into a bunch of textfields. Here's one way you can do it. You have one type of element that you can too your page - a step. You can add unlimited steps, set the order of each step. Further you have a series of elements attached to each step -> Body of text, images, downloads, videos etc. This makes it really easy to make a tutorial. You can instantly see what your tutorial looks like, insert extra steps etc. Here's some previews. There is not CSS - its just code: Just showing you guys before I give up on this too :D

Do they have their own generator to create these? It'd be pretty easy to make. To be honest I don't see the attraction with the meme type thingies with the one image over and over just with different captions. I much prefer the demotivational ones :)

Sounds interesting!!

I see you've already figured it out. Yup that's exactly what we got. Certainly no registration issues and no spam bots.

Happy 21st! Hope you have a good one.

Oh, I didn't actually watch the video... Just saying in relation to all your statues lol You got XAMPP working right? Just google 'php dynamic images'. Getting good at something isn't supposed to be easy.. :P
