Hey guys Slowly adding some much needed improvements to GDR :) New Header I've added a whole new header and look. I'll try to minimize the amount of stuff while making it obvious to new visitors what GDR is about. The branding is a lot different from GDU, which I don't really wana do but I think it's necessary: it's all part of showing people immediately what the system is about. I.e. if you've never been here and you read "GDU Refinery", you don't really its game dev, as compared to "Game Dev Refinery". I've also brought back the famous RMXPU bubbles, and added something a little more gamey, with a Dota Sven (see my signature). Ability edit posts It took a lot of coding, but you guys can now edit posts! That is, of course, if you do so within 3 days of posting in which case editing is locked (for obvious reasons.. if you have an update, just make another post). This is particularly useful for mods - I've gone through and removed a certain someone's spammy tags. Phew! Follow Post changed to Bookmarked Posts I've realized that no one really wants to follow posts per se.... but maybe save them, keep them for later. Accordingly, to encourage more use, I've changed the terminology from following posts to bookmarking posts. Accordingly, you'll find your bookmarks in the menu bar: Future updates On the plate for future updates are as follows: ability to edit comments more comment actions, including "agreed, helpful, like, funny" etc. improved profiles a member's listing and leaderboard an updated homepage... I'm thinking of merging the activity tab into a sidebar instead of having it separated out. We'll see how it goes :) Lemme know what you think of the new look. You guys are awfully shy with feedback sometimes (am I that intimidating? :lmao:  ).

I hope so too :) Yeah 10-years is pretty crazy, especially for a site like this. We've been lucky for a number of things, like the staff members we've had and the fact that we've always had someone to host us, and of course the fact that I studied two degrees and stayed in uni so long that I had heaps of time to code

How about the one in my sig? I'm messing around with the UI now, and this is what it looks like on a tablet. Brownie points for anyone who recognizes those particles! https://web.archive.org/web/20120303095921/http://www.rmxpunlimited.net/

Hey guys I've been super busy with work this week and no time for development on GDR. But, here are the upcoming features: Coming soon Editing for posts and comments (finally!); Updated UI - I've updated it recently, but I'm still not happy. Trying things out and until I get it right New post-type: Demos. I've found a way to get around our server's 50MB max upload limit. Although a link would be fine by itself, I will introduce this new post type for you guys to either link or upload your demos (to 150MB), to share with the community and get feedback. Coming not as soon reactions to posts agreed useful like funny etc. way better profiles, with less tabs, and more social. Vote in my poll On my test server, GDR is blazing quick. Unfortaunately the live server we have going isn't so quick - and ajax actions like opening a new post or making a comment take a wee bit too long to load. I know that - but I want you guys to confirm so I have made a poll. I plan to make some tweaks to the code and defer some of the loading in order to speed things up. Coming not as soon

That is not the point of the refinery at all. Read this: http://www.gdunlimited.net/posts/welcome-to-the-refinery

Well, I need to edit some stuff first. I just realized...... GDU Refinery doesn't actually mean anything unless you're an existing member of this site. :annoyed: Woops. So I've decided to rejig the name a little bit for the purposes of advertising (which you guys are definitely helping me with). So it shall be known as... *drum-roll please*... Game Dev Refinery. Yes, that is comic sans. Also rolls off the tongue better than Game Dev Unlimited Refinery. Less confusing, y'know?
-
Boom. I do realize we rank well for some things on Google. But the last people who would use the Game Dev Refinery are leeches. This advertising will focus on: Game Dev Refinery; Developers who would benefit from GDR; Across various platforms/websites, excluding google search. The first stage is basically alerting people to the fact that it exists.

What is the refinery missing?
Marked replied to Marked's topic in Feedback, Bug Report and Forum Help
You can do tags and members by: clicking on a tag in a post; and visiting a member's profile. You can't filter by game. Do you think these should be implemented differently? It's a bit difficult to judge the problems at the moment, given that there's only a handful of posts. -
1v1 mid, lets go. Add me on steam.

Hahahaahahah your lies are adorable, ghost.

If there's so many posts that posts are getting burried, I'm not sure we have a problem :) But yeah, I see exactly what you mean and "really popular" I think is the only way to fuel the system, if you get what I mean. I.e., compare the community involvement needed for a successful blog, forum or GDUr. I think you move along the scale in terms of community involvement needed to keep it going. Content is super short-term and all you really want is likes and comments as soon as you post it. There's sort of portfolio feel also to the profiles. Anyway, I like your suggestions a lot. The challenging part with those is the timing: I have two planned features waiting in featured posts + currently online (in real-time). The inclusion of those now, for example, would make the system look less active beacuse there's not enough happening for those to be useful. Haha..... Ya, of course.... those are essential but I've been too lazy to code them. TBH it takes a long while to code that out, and no one really has complained and maybe you would forget if we didnt have to edit your post  I will definitely add those in...... -
I'm planning to create a bunch of advertising materials for GDUr. Back in the days, advertising on other RM forums was a huge source of traffic that's interested in what you're advertising. Here's my first go at a forum signature banner. Yes, this is a void from Dota and it's probably a breach of copyright, but it looks cool right?

I thought about you when I killed the ghost monkey. But I never saw you use it. So chop chop.

As you guys may notice, I like to use the term refined a lot when describing new features for GDUr :) The launch of the Refinery started out with a gigantic list of emo's, which I realized was way too many to choose from. Here's the 45 finalists who the made the cut. I tried to going for the ones which convey emotions (which is the point, isn't it?):

Hi guys I'm about to starting advertising the refinery. Before I do, what features do you think its missing? I haven't received a ton of feedback, which is fair enough given that it needs a sizeable influx of developers :) I think that a system like this needs momentum in terms of activity to keep it afloat. Before I attempt to build such momentum, I want to make sure there's nothing majorly missing from the system, such that it affects people wanting to stick around.

Welcome! Can you tell us a little more about yourself? E.g. are you working on any projects at the moment?

Wah I almost forgot, there's now flags for your country:

Hi all I have just uploaded the latest batches of updates to GDU Refinery, see changelog here: http://www.gdunlimited.net/forums/topic/12425-gdur-changelog/ This is mostly a UI update. The goal was to make it more modern, simple and sleek. The posts had a black theme, which was risky and I ended up ditching it for a more consistent light design. There isn't a huge amount here in the way of functionality changes. One thing I found lacking with initial launch of GDUr is the rather isolating feel to it. It is kinda difficult to see what is going on outside of new posts. So I've reduced the listing size from 4 to 3 per row and added a side bar: Upcoming features: Members page. Like the forums listing, except it's GDUr based. GDUr differentiates between members who have and haven't yet used GDUr, so only those members will show up; and Live "Members online" system. Not overly exciting for some of you, but I plan to use web sockets to show what members are online and what they are looking at in real-time, just add that touch of community feel to the homepage. Hope you enjoy the new look and feel :)

Commercial Games with RPG Maker 2000
Marked replied to MaverickHunterDBoy's topic in General Game Development
Of course you can :) I never thought there was issues with selling on any of the RPG Makers. But why RM2K? It's soooo old. Even I've used it before. MV is much more portable. I would thought it's very difficult to sell a game that you have to download on your desktop when there's so many good free ones these days. Something like an andriod game or in-browser... I think you'd be more likely to be successful. -
Please vote in my poll. I feel like... we've expanded too much. We support XP right through to MV and try to support others too.... is it all getting a bit too busy? I've created the games section, tuts, scripts, refinery, even a gallery, and chat room and custom resource uploader and manager on top of everything the forum provides. Is it too confusing? Does it need to be refined?

-nods- who knows. If you're working a project, you'll totally definitely be active :) You post anything related to your projects, like those small milestones or coding achievements etc. in the GDU Refinery. I'd love to post mine but then this site would probably get hacked : Also, RMXP is like 100 years old in software-years. The latest in RPG Maker MV. If you're into ruby then you'd stick with XP or go with the latest ruby based RPG Maker VX Ace. Otherwise, XP is really old. MV runs on javascript and as such you can port to multiple platforms (which is awesome) as well as use a console to debug your code :)
