Thanks Marked for noticing the effort i put into it. I worked really hard. Since I plan to continue the game into a proper one, i guess i'll make face sets for all the characters and enemies too.
-
that i believe can be done, and if i remember there was a script some where exactly for that. I'll try and find it, but search yourself you might get lucky and find something you like.
-
nope, you didn't miss it, pol and \i wern't on the ball is all. We'll do a double feature for June and July's vote.

First Saltome I feel like I should point out that this is an ARTICLE I had written for an online magazine (and another site), as the title states. I put this in the News section so people who only check the main page would see it. If we had a newsletter I would put it there, but since we don't have one (it was you who was doing to do that wasn't it, or was that just game news feed? I can't remember) I put it where every one who visits the site will see. Second, Yes this is entirely my opinion, again as stated in the disclaimer. If you have a problem with my opinion that's fine, but at least read the whole article of writing before attacking me on things clearly stated in and at the beginning of it. This isn't the first time you've done this to me and it makes you look (at least to me) less intelligent and creditable. I do care, but like almost every one I know I'm not willing to put an incredible amount of time for a project with some one who more than likely won't get the game off the first step(and so far this includes you since I haven't exactly seen you volunteer to help a noobie who just joins with no info/experience for their project but are looking for a team). This isn't an article about experienced people who already have a plan and 1/3 of their game already programmed, it's about the tons of people who are brand new to the indy game making scene who believe that by asking for a team of people to make their game it'll get finished, which isn't true. These people need to understand that because they have so little experience and no relationship with the people they are asking for MAJOR help from, that they will in most cases get no responses. I'm not trying to discourage them from making their game, I'm letting them know that at the beginning they will need to learn the majority of stuff themselves before they can get a group of people to help with such big projects. Yes this is a support forum, not a group gathering forum. Again as I said in my article if they need help with a script or advice we (the community as a whole, not just RMU) are always willing to give 20-30 minutes of our time to explain or help. This is true, but that isn't the point of the article. The article is about why no one is joining them in the first place. I'm not saying that these are the rules Saltome. I'm letting people know from personal experience that just joining a random forum with an idea and no actual work done, that their goal of a game won't be fulfilled. It's not that I'm tired of people joining and asking for help, what I'm tired of is these newcomers being so discouraged by the lack of excitement for their project idea that they quit altogether. It's important for people to understand that life isn't easy, making games isn't easy, but if they stick to it they can persevere. Also that they can't always expect every one to jump up and help them with every aspect of the project, that they will have to do most of the leg work to get it done. It is hard work to make a game and it's important that newcomers to the scene realize this if they truly want to get their game made. This is your opinion, and success is the only proof you can give. I'm a few years older than you and have had many hardships to over come, both in my professional life and game making. Don't presume to know what another person's experiences are, you'll just make yourself look bad. Power is only attained by others giving it to you, this is a fact. And that power can be taken from you by them when ever they want. Effort is something that only you have, no one can take it away from you. This is not an issue about power, it's an issue about effort. If you're not willing to put the effort in your own project you will not get anywhere. Support forums like RMU aren't here to cater to your every whim, they are here to help you when you are having trouble. They expect you to put forth some kind of effort before helping and if you can't see that then your projects will fail. We're all human beings and it's human nature to help those who are struggling, not to help those who are demanding and giving no real time. This is the same reason why peasants hated lords. Help those who help themselves, greedy bums be damned. While I agree people do lack foresight, this isn't the point of the article.

If you find it hard to recruit people read this, it'll explain a few things for you. Also when recruiting, you should have a description of the game you plan to make, and a proper game topic for it. No one will be interested if you have nothing prepared.

This article was intended for an online magazine that's been suspended but I decided to post it anyway. Disclaimer: These are the views of the author and are not necessarily the views of GDU, RMU or it's staff. Why will no one join me? Any one who has started working with any game engine to build a game for the first time has thought to themselves: “Hey, why don’t I get a team together to help me work on this project?†And it seems like a reasonable thing to ask. I mean you already know that games require many resources to be completed and you can’t be expected to know how to do all of them can you? No, not every one is good at coding, rendering, pixel art, mapping or writing. So why not ask people who are much more knowledgeable to help you out with your project. Your idea is awesome and you’re sure every one will love it. So you Google the engine you’re using and find a nice community of independent game makers like yourself and sign up. You rush over to the Recruitment forums because every one needs help once in a while, and post your first topic: Insert Game Title Recruiting! With a nifty description about the game and maybe a few lines of the initial concept you’ve been toying with for the last three days. Now it’s been 3 months, you’ve been waiting for people to join your team to get the game started but you notice no one has messaged you back. You look to see that a few people have made comments asking for more details or just spamming your thread with slander. What happened? Why were these people uncooperative or even hostile to your game idea? Well maybe they’re just mean on this website so you’ve decided to move on and try the next big forum that Google says supports your game engine. Once again you post your Recruitment thread and after about 2 weeks you get the same messages. Why is this happening? Is it just you? You go down the list and look at the other threads and notice a pattern. No one with less than 500 posts on the forums is even looked at seriously. Sure there is a great team of people working on a game with tons of awesome scripts, systems and they even have 50 screenshots of their progress. But you notice that each member has been on the forum for years. What’s up with that? Why them and not you? Now I’m here to explain to you why. It’ll be painful to hear but it’s the honest truth: Nobody Cares! That’s it. No one on these sites really cares about your great game idea. And to be honest, why should they? You just showed up out of the blue and posted a two paragraph summery of what your game is about and asked for help. Sure your idea might be awesome to you, but on these sites we’ve seen them a million times. Every day people post their ideas on the forums and are expecting to make a team for their game. Now I’m not saying that your game isn’t worth making, of course it is. But it’s you who will have to make it. I know it doesn’t seem fair that you’ll have to learn every aspect of game making in order to do what you want but that’s life. You haven’t proven to any one on the forum that you’re worth taking a risk to help in such a demanding way. And yes it is demanding. Making a game can take you any where from 500-3,000 hours of work or more. So you better be ready to put in the hours. Be prepared to prove yourself to the community that you’re not just some half wit wanting to remake your favorite game. When people see that you’ve actually made an effort by yourself, that you’ve got something on the go and won’t just abandon it because your life got to complicated or finals drained you, they will be open to helping you out. Now if you’re having trouble with smaller aspects of the game, like a script won’t work or you don’t know how to do a certain action, feel more than welcome to ask for help. On an individual basis these forums are havens for newcomers. People are more than willing to give up 20-30 minutes to give a little advice or help, but don’t expect a long term commitment. It’s up to you to make your game, not the game making communities. Once you’ve been on the forums for a while and know how to get around the engine people will be much more willing to help you out on a more long term basis. So keep at it, don’t get discouraged by set backs and ask for help when you need it, but be ready to do the work. And never forget to thank the people helping you out!

because word game puzzles arn't even close to standard in RPGmaker, you're going to have to rely heavily on RGSS scripts. Which means if you can't make it i doubt it'll be made. This will require a huge undertaking to make what is essentially a new engine for your game based in RM. Personally You'd be better off with Stencyl or Flash where people have made these types of games before and you can dissect them and learn.

What would you like to see in an open world sandbox RPG?
dolarmak replied to chigoo's topic in Engine Discussion
Ah, but the Sims games arn't Sandbox RPGs. The difference in game play and style is very big factor, which is why I don't believe the bathroom stuff is necessary. I have no complaint about how you handle booze and drugs, but keep an eye on how the flow of game play works with your game mechanics. If the pace is annoyingly slow because you gotta pee and shower every 20 minutes in game or because you're running to eat and do other non-quest/mission stuff, you'll lose most of your audience. -
Biography Screen Instead of Status (RPG Maker XP)
dolarmak replied to GermanyXItaly1000's question in Support
Ace has been away for a few weeks to take intensive classes. He'll be back in a little while, but i can't remember when, probably August or September. In the mean time like i said, fiddle with the parameters in the bio scene and i'm sure you change it looking how you want. -
What would you like to see in an open world sandbox RPG?
dolarmak replied to chigoo's topic in Engine Discussion
As much as I enjoy sandbox games, (Elder Scrolls, Fallout ext.) I have never found an indy game that does the genre justice. The biggest problems are usually a lack of content and unbalanced game play. I'd much rather play a linear game with good content and game play over an open style with small quests that can't keep my attention, or a broken game whose game mechanics don't fit together. One of my biggest peeves is definatly game mechanics that fail to work together or are totally unnecessary. And looking at your description I see a few that could probably be dropped without actually making the game worse, or in some cases the game may even be better without them. Personally I would do without the shower and bathroom stuff. I believe these mechanics will take away from your game incredibly making them tedious and unfun. This kind of mechanic hasn't been used in many games for a reason and the ones I have seen with it were mostly unplayable or entirely unfun. So over all more content and do without the bathroom stuff. But these are just my suggestions. Good luck with your game. -
you'd be better off using a hud that displays the character HP, but i'd only suggest that if you have the player losing HP outside of battle a LOT. otherwise this is a feature I wouldn't really worry about. as long as you flash the screen(red or purple depending if just damage or poison usually) when they get hurt to let them know it's hurting them then it should be fine. Most games pre 2005 actually only used Huds if the battles happened on the same map as the running around occures. What version of Rpg Maker are you using so I can suggest a few huds.

Here ya go, a rope ladder, if you still want the stairs let me know, I'll probably make them eventually, but I don't have a need for them right now. Since this is an edit of the earth cave's ladder it won't look out of place. Your best bet is to set an event to make them always facing the wall when moving up or down on the side ladders, to make it look like they are climbing it.

Marked knows I'm willing to help him as a mod any time.

Okay, as my previous topic said want to make a window which displays the current ammo the characters carry. every ammo type is an Item, so I figure there must be a way to call that item's quantity to display it. After looking like crazy I can't find any way which will let me call up the quantity of each Ammo item that they have. All i need it to display is the quantity, the actual names I have listed with text strings.
-
Hey guys, I'm making a window for my menu that displays the amount of ammo you have, but the I want the text to be aligned closer to the upper left than it'll let me. For some reason it won't display the text that high or left. When i try it cuts the letters off. Any suggestions? Edit: I actually found a way around this, first i display an empty window in the position i want, then i display a bigger window over top with a opacity of 0 so it only shows the text. If any one knows the real way to do this (in a single window) let me know.

Okay, i played your demo and things look promising. I think the dream graphics are awesome creepy. Good job with the boss fight too. It was pretty hard. What are the bonuses you will gain from beating the dream sequences? I have a few suggestions. First a stamina bar or indication of how tired you are would be nice. In Harvest moon they give you the indication by having your character sigh and wipe his brow to let you know you were 1/2 done your stamina and then another exhausted expression when he's at 1/4 stamina. It's just a way to let us know that there is a limit. Will you make items that replenish stamina? Adding more selection on what you can grow is kinda obvious, but since this is a demo i will assume you'll add more later. Instead of just teleporting your character to bed when your stamina runs out, why not let the player continue to walk around? it's a nice start, keep it up.

To be honest Saltome, with how much I got done on my entry for this contest I'm actually thinking about making this a full project. I'll edit the story and give it more thought, but with the majority of the leg work done I'm pretty happy with my progress. I might make a few ascetic changes to the menu, but over all I'm happy with it. I also need to look more carefully into balancing the weapons and enemy drops, but those things are easy to fix.

He never said he was done designing websites, he said he was done designing RMU. there is a difference. Its not that GDU is going to be like RMU but for other game engines, it's that the forums won't be used for any Game Engine support or scripts. It's more like an interactive profile for you game. It'll have forums for team building and discussing ideas pertaining to each individual game itself. At least that's what I got out of Marked's description.
-
I'm excited about this :) these are a few of the features you said you were working on I was hoping we'd have here on RMU. I think the separation of the sites and their features is a good idea. GDU's focus being on Indy game profiles and team building while RMU being focused on game making support and scripts makes sense to me. can't wait to see how it looks when you're done.

Welcome to the site gmaker808. another XP fan lol

generally for non commercial use, companies don't mind or at least don't usually pursue legal actions. On the other hand some companies (like SquareEnix and Disney) tend to be douche-bags when it comes to any use of their materials.I have seen several non profit games get shut down by big companies, but they are generally really well know projects. I say go for it, but if they send a 'cease and desist' comply with it.

Create a small game in a week.
dolarmak replied to Broken Messiah's topic in Community Contests & Events
I know this is a double post, but after a did a few detailed play tests of my game I added a patch for it to solve the glaring errors i made when rushing to get the last part in time for the contest. Download it here, just replace the old files with these.
