  1. Ooh ooh I know, I want... it to be the last Christmas for 365 days, and a puppy, and maybe some cake, and if at all possible for Bill Gates (aka Satan) to suddenly die of a heart attack leaving me his inheritance.
  2. I understand the fact that it's fantasy sports but, you also pointed out something rather important "Madden HAS to come out in the year its representing or there is no point buying it" a new game will come out in the next year and everyone will toss the old one aside not caring about it wasting their time and money on a game that will be obsolete, again, next year. It's these people who waste their money on game's like these that ruin the game industry. "But there is virtually zero chance of them Playing in the NFL let alone playing along side their favorite players" Shouldn't that be an almost zero chance of actually as it seems it's 100% possible virtually and only virtually. Sorry, I don't see the point of these games. I'm not fond of game's based off a sport or first person shooter sequels because no matter what you change it's the exact same game as the one before. Madden 2010 and Madden 2011 same game only difference is one has "players" the other doesn't. That isn't much of a drastic change and doesn't actually affect the game play in anyway. As far as getting away from mainstream and into the smaller companies and home brewed games I'll agree with for some aspects, the problem with them is they don't have the money and resources to make a truly great game so they have to cut back and trim corners. This of course doesn't actually hurt the game play but does however hurt the graphics and music quality. That's where the whole question of what really makes a game good, graphics or game play? Take a save the world RPG 3 blue dots and a pink dot are on a journey to discover the rectangle to defeat the evil triangle and save the square people of their world 3 boys and a girl are questing to find the sword of legend and defeat the evil demon who has enslaved humanity. In essence they are the same things 3 blue dots are 3 boys, the girl is the pink ,the rectangle is the sword of legend, and the evil triangle is the evil demon. The game play never changes so which is better? The second one because it's prettier with flashing lights and pictures? Sure it might be more appealing but it's by no means better. ~TheCrym Apologies for posting my opinions
  3. What reason do we give them to try, there's always going to be a group that's going to buy new games and go to theaters to see every new movie released. They can do the bad games and bad movies at a fraction of the price they could do something worthwhile. They don't even have to do original just need's to be presented in an original and appealing way. Square can make all the Final Fantasy's they want but if it feels like the same game with less depth then whats the point? Eventually that same game over and over will only sell to the dedicated fan boys who buy every game in the series along with everything they can get their hands on with that title. Pretty much the same with movies except instead of a sequel its a remake of a timeless classic. Now on occasion there are some unique idea's that come out just as an example a game that came out a few years ago, Eternal Sonata, was actually a good game that had depth and some originality, though it didn't sell as well as it should. How many Call to Duty games are out now? Or better question how many football games have been released in the past years to many for me to count and while technically they are game's I consider them nothing more than lazy sports. I actually get mad when I hear someone talking about their "collection" and they have 2+ NFL "games", come on wanna play football get outside and play don't sit on a couch buying out so that the quality of games has to drop to barely above crap, give it 2 or 3 years and designers will literally take a dump in a box and sell it as a game (sarcasm). If and only if we are lucky there might be a decent game out that sells well that can help slightly improve the overall quality. ~TheCrym

Oh, it's cool I'll be learning this for months (can always learn more). I have MSN, I just haven't been on in an extremely long time since it started giving me problems, not entirely sure if I remember my log-in info for it. I'm going to reinstall it later this week. I'm reading through Leon's tutorials now they are more help than I thought they would be, that's what I get for skimming through. Anyway thanks for offering to help, I look forward to it. If I can get on MSN before next week I'll send you my contact info. ~The Crym On a side note before I go, I'm sure it's simple and I'll facepalm after asking, how do you post code blocks?
  5. Nobody in either industry is really thinking about doing something creative, they just want something fast and cheep that they will sell good. Honestly I rather dislike newer game's, Square literally took Final Fantasy III(j) (Not Final Fantasy VI which we all know was III(USA) and remade it for the Nintendo DS, the new version has advanced graphics and is extremely buggy, of course conversion from NES to NDS wouldn't go exactly smooth when you're changing the old 2D classic RPG graphics into shiney new 3D graphics that doesn't even look great. Most game's made today lack an important aspect, depth; as an example I'll mention Final Fantasy VII how many people had to reach for a tissue when Aerith died? I know I sure did. As far as movies all I see are remakes of the same things, that or gorror flicks (the supposed horror movies that focus on blood and guts, ooh so scary). Seems that new ideas are pushed aside for the stuff that has been done time and time again. Alas, it seems we live in an age and time when pioneer spirit and new ideas are frowned upon in favor of the big box office hit, second version. ~The Crym

Thanks, I've already been messing around in Scene_Menu today and it seems pretty simple to delete stuff now I'm stuck trying to add something, I'll get it eventually. I skimmed through Leons tutorials already before I registered but I thought it looked similar to the same stuff I've read through dozens of times, perhaps I was wrong so I'll actually read them instead of skimming this time. Thanks for the advice I'll go see how bad I can mess up Scene_End now, let's hope I don't make it to bad now. As far as doing what I was looking to do in Scene_Menu any suggested way of doing that?
  7. To tell the truth I didn't notice that until I looked at your sprite sheet after testing, I just knew something looked funny. It's a simple mistake I don't think more people would ever really notice it.
  8. I love GIMP, I'm still getting used to the interface with it since I used to use GraphicsGale and used Photoshop CS4 in college. I meant to test that sprite but the way it looks I think the cape is swinging the right way. I'll test it real quick. For the cape have you tried to do something similar to the Fighter04 sprite in the RTP for XP? Instead of it swinging its more like the air is catching it and pushing it back with every step. Honestly though, I don't see anything wrong with the cape swinging like it does it seems to make some sense but, maybe it should be switched it seems it comes forward into the arm that is back and moves back with the arm that is forward.
  9. Sometimes taking a break is the best idea, gives you time to set back and relax and think about the game from a different perspective. When I'm starting a new story I usually let the concept fester in my subconscious and then when I go to actually write it down I can get about 50-60% down easy. Latest game I'm working on has been laying around in the background for a few years while I focused on other things (college, family, work) not quite ready to put the story on paper just yet but it's close to the prime ripeness. (Yes an analogy comparing ideas with fruit) It's every new game developers goal to make the greatest thing since sliced bread as their first game, on that the first game will never and I mean never be the most outstanding thing ever created, not that it won't be decent but it won't be as good as the second or third game. I do think that failure for some people is a good thing, at least they tried and now they understand the amount of work that the finished games get, I don't mean they should get discouraged, but a small failure to give them a reality check as to what they are capable of.
  10. I've only dropped one game since I started, me and a group of friends were working on it and slowly they all decided it was to hard to do for them, left me with it alone about two thirds of the way done and and didn't have the files for it since it was on a server between all of us. They decided that everyone quit and deleted everything which was nearly 2 years of dedicated work. I've decided that making another game I'm doing it alone mostly, it's not that hard there's nothing to it that you can't learn to do with some effort. I think the only bit of help I'll be getting with this would be learning RGSS and advice (and music, I know I can't do the music I'm tone deaf XD). I agree though most projects get dropped because of the people wanting to do something that is outside of their ability and a bit unrealistic. Most don't want to sit down and learn how to do something that can help them get their idea completed, others want to put together a "team" that will do everything for them. I don't think a lot of the new developers understand the amount of work it takes to make a game.
  11. Thanks for the support, rgangsta. I'm hoping I can start actually understanding this stuff so I can be of some use to the community.

Okay then, I'm guessing that I'll multipurpose this topic. My CMS with Day/Night/Calender I've been working on customizing the menu windows, so far I have succeeded in deleting the window_playtime and the window_steps completely since they we're just taking up space. I've also moved the command window and gold window to the right side of the menu and put the status window on the left side. I've added a new selection in the command window "Formation" which I'll tackle after I get more acquainted with RGSS. I've created a new window under the command window and above the gold window which is 160x160 this is the window I'm focusing on now. With this customization I'm planning to add in a day and night system and also a small calender system for 7 days. I'm wanting to have an icon for day and night and have the "time of day" displayed with the icon. Also hoping to be able to have a icon for each day appear next to the day/night icon. Something like this. Don't worry I'm not asking for someone to do it for me (heavens no anything worth doing is worth doing myself). Just curious how someone would go about doing this. Side note the icons there we're done in paint directly onto the picture, they wont be the actual icons I'll do those in Photoshop, GIMP, or Graphics Gale. I also don't have the time actually on there either that was done in paint as well so I do not have any progress other than making the window show up.
  13. This would really interest me, I'd seriously love to see something like this actually able to work. I've been hoping to find a good online Pokemon game for some time but all of them that's been made are either viral, spyware, or been shut down by Nintendo. Hope to see this finished soon, I would definitely play it.
  14. Ha ha, no problem I'm just glad I could do something to help.
  15. Gonna check this I think you can use the auto-tiles in a better way to get a unique look to those wide spaces, though generally if it's a large space I don't like to use an auto-tile. Okay yeah had to double check this, don't know if you know about it but try double clicking on the auto-tile to open up a new window with auto-tile expansion. This is a bit more difficult to get used to but is effective if used right.
  16. Ah I know what that is, its the way the auto-tiles line up when used and how they come together like puzzle pieces. A bit of a fun thing really, the left hand corner looks like it's supposed to be the actual auto-tile, could be useful for making an auto-tile template. A little messy though but effective. Never though of auto-tiles as 6blocks across and 6blocks down and making each box 16x16, that could make for some easier understanding of how they work, nice job.
  17. Ah thanks for the link Crimson, though that sort of thing I already understand, I know what variables, functions, and methods are, I just can't seem to figure out how to make them become the pretty pictures and shiny lights on the screen, not sure why that seems so hard. I've been spending today editing the windows and scenes in RMXP and I've figured out the basics of moving things around like putting the status window on the left side and the command, playtime, steps, and gold windows on the right side as well as adding more commands that currently do nothing. Window's seem to be the easiest thing to edit, mostly I'm hoping to be able to create my own CMS and CBS from scratch. I guess I'll be teaching myself slowly, very very slowly till someone can help me with learning the more advanced stuff like a CBS, I know everyone is busy so no worries I'll get there eventually on my own. ~The Crym Oh by the way, um nevermind I forgot (I wonder why I don't just delete this rather than typing up the fact that I forgot what I was going to type)
  18. I like both of them the first one is my preference, but it seems to dark. Perhaps you could find something in between so it's not so dark like in the first one, and so the red doesn't "pop" as much as in the second one. If your going for a dark and gloomy I wouldn't change anything from the original. Hope this help's solve the problem. Extra question, what software are you using to make your sprites? ~The Crym

  20. Hi there folks, you can call me Crym. I've been working with RPG Maker for many many years working with friends on a few game's but they all gave up before the game's really even got past concept. I take pride in everything I do, so generally I'll see anything I start on to the end, unless I get to busy and have to postpone something indefinitely. I'm pretty good with almost all aspects of game development, I'm no good at scripting and I'm no musician, that's not to say that I can't get better at what I can already do well of course. As to why I'm here, scripting, I'm hoping that if I hang out around here long enough the scripting know how of the community will eventually rub off on me and I'll eventually understand it. ~The Crym

Okay so here's what I'm looking for, specifically someone who wouldn't mind teaching RGSS. Specifically wanting to learn how to exactly to put everything to use, I understand "the basics" but when I go to code my brain pretty much hides in a corner and cries. Looking over other scripts didn't really help either (more brain crying). Reading all the wonderful scripting tutorials I can find also lead to brain crying, mostly cause they only tell the same things over and over (this is a variable and this is a method and this is an array) but none of them tell you how to apply them to RMXP to customise my game (maybe they do and I just don't get it). I'm mostly failing to understand how exactly all of the code becomes all the pretty pictures and flashing lights. Well I understand that, in theory just need help with it. I'm a firm believer in you can give a man to fish and he'll be knocking on your door demanding more fish tomorrow, or you can teach a man to fish and you wont have to worry with him begging for more fish, though he may come back for steak or ribs. If anyone would like to help let me know, any advice for what to do other than what I've already posted trying. Not looking for tutorials on "the basics". Not looking for scripts someone else has done. Not looking for hand out's. Perhaps if anyone has links to some more advanced tutorials, like custom windows, or custom battle systems (yes I know there are scripts available but I'd like to be able to make my own stuff.) Oh and an early thanks to anyone who can help you have no idea how much it will help if I can actually learn something. ~The Crym
