Universities in New Zealand are a part of government, its a public body. Our fees are also subsidized by the government, and the rest that isnt subsidized we can loan from the government interest-free. So yeah, very much so our taxes. Its not just tax breaks, its funded by the government.

Yeah but its money spent on research that could be spent in other areas. A university in the middle of NZ researching what the future sex industry will be like in Amsterdam? Since my taxes payed for it, I don't care about Amsterdam or any academics predictions for when I'll be 60. It is money that could be spent elsewhere such as the sciences. There was a story recently in NZ about the governments lack of funding in the sciences. This type of research doesn't fuel any kind of innovation and I dont see how its beneficial to society, except for another story on news websites that has 'sex' in the title, guaranteeing a few extra hits. There are issues with how much it would cost to make one of these. There would need to be some sort of security around the robot and client which means human interactions of some kind with the person seeking prostitution, and a lot of them want to do it anonymously. I decided not to bother to argue what technology will be around in 2050.

I'm not going to read it, lets hope there's more valuable content in it than a prediction on the sex industry. Is that what they're planning? I don't think it will really take off aside from its own niche of people (they actually have something like this in japan). I don't know what its like to be with a prostitute.. but I don't think you can replace sex with a human, and i dont think it could become so popular to ever take over human prostitution. People are still going to know they are robots. They predicted walking humanoid robots as our servants by this time back in the 80's (or 90's). Generally if it is free, you should be able to redistribute it unless it is expressly stated otherwise, and include credit (if possible). In such a scenario, you would assume that its the intention of the original poster to redistribute their content. That's what I think anyway so its not against the rules to post this project, and we don't have rules requiring credit because its just common courtesy to do it.

I've also dove pretty far into the html without having a proper set of UI styles which wasnt a bright idea.

Just letting you know that a few members who I wouldn't include in the game, that are on your list, are: Ravenclaw - while slightly active on this forum, and played a big part in terms of causation in the life of the site, its probably best to leave ravenclaw out because he was mainly active on the old old forum, and he would probably wonder why he's on the list. He's definitely on the rmxpu legends list, but probably shouldn't be in this game Dark Dragon - we had a poll once whether or not to shut down the forum, this guy was the only member to vote yes. He'd flock to whatever's important, he's definitely not an rmxpu legend. Nisage - he was super helpful back in the day, but its probably been too long between drinks to include him in this game. He's just been gone too long, it would be hard to give him a character Blazinks - a legend on the old forum. Definitely needs to be omitted. The rest would be good, I think we can get in touch with nearly all of those members and I know enough about them and their contribution to develop bios.

Well you could. The advantages with this system is the integration: you can login with your own account (so mods on the forums can mod in chat too, if needed), and bbcode from the site can be used. The chat uses the same functions that the forum uses to parse bbcode, as well as the rest of the site too. It's really buggy at the moment and I plan to work on it of course. I do however need to brush up on my javascript and get my head around these sockets.

Not all of this will be ready once GDU goes live... originally that was the plan. Since I moved into a flat with other students in Feb I find that I haven't got much time to spare anymore. Gotta work at least 20 hours a week to keep a float as well as a pretty busy study workload. If you go to GDU now and look at the menu items that have been dimmed out, those are the features that will not be available when we switch over, which is a decent chunk of the above. I made the decision to switch over to GDU prematurely to finally be rid of this broken down system we're currently using. It's clear to me that there's not enough time, and the best I can offer is work on GDU over time, starting with functioning forums, which is pretty much all we have here to begin with. At the core of GDU is the dashboard and the games section, but these will take some time to develop and considerable testing too. Hopefully I will be able to get staff testing the GDU forums shortly and once we're functioning properly, we'll make the switch.

Seems to not work initially, but then works fine after refresh. How odd. I've put a message up saying to refresh if that happens. Also bob, it does a while to load up in firefox. But if u see the spinner, it will start up.

I was originally not going to make a topic for this because I know I'm opening it up too soon... but I thought it was needed to replace the old chat system. This topic is mainly for reporting bugs, but feel free to give suggestions for the final version. This chat uses sockets, and at the moment I don't think it is accessible with google chrome. Has there ever been a complaint? Not to sound immoral, but that's never really been a problem and doesn't influence the decision not to do it. But Ive dealt with 1 complaint and asked permission on several occasions for content that I did post here from other places.

With the release of GDU approaching, here is a post on the theory behind the system. Please note that this is the theory behind it, and a lot of these features will not be included upon release. But this is what we are building to. From RMXP site to Indie Game Development – with support for specific engines RMXP Unlimited started out as a site for RPG Maker XP and has since struggled to keep up in developing a community for its successors. GDU will be a site to incorporate indie game development in general with no specific engine or class of engines at the centre of it. This is not to say that our majority of members, RMXP users, will no longer find a home here. There will still be sections for specific engines. Quality content GDU will aim to produce good quality content that is exclusive to the site and offer incentives for the authors who choose GDU to host it. RMXPU being a home to 2nd hand resources had long-term benefits but was overall damaging to building the community. No more content will show up on GDU that was coped form somewhere else, unless by a member. Central content system At one point in time on RMXPU (although not the case at the present time) there were 4 locations where you could find a script. This included on the website, on the forums and in the downloads manager. Similar for tutorials, specific content was not located in one place. Sections for each class of content will be created based on the needs of each and to allow all visitors to the site to find what they want as easily and efficiently as possible. This means that content will not be posted in forum topics anymore. Forum topics are temporary Many indie game development sites setup a forum and leave it at that. Forums for everything – graphics, scripts, tutorials etc. It works but its not the best way to do things. Certain content needs different things – more than just a single textbox filled with bbcode. The theory behind the GDU forum is temporary benefits. The best example of this is a support topic. A member makes a topic requesting help, another member answers the topic, the topic is closed and forgotten about. It never needs to come up again except in searches for those who have the same problem. The specific forums on GDU will be determined based on this temporary benefits theory, with long-term benefits content in their own sections. Integration With the need for many more sections that just a forum, a lot more coding and new sections must be developed. For this to happen, member integration and theme integration must be seamless. On RMXPU the theme is made to look identical but there are different images and different CSS styles for both of those themes. Similarly members have a forum account and a website account that used to login at the same time. On GDU, there is no duplicate code – globally across the site the theme is generated from the exact same file, and the members use their forum account everywhere. The website and forum are essentially one system. Finding the content you are interested in You will be able to manage and keep track of the things that interest you on a dashboard. You will be able to find content based on your personal set of tags/keywords, see who has replied to your topics or see replies to topics you have posted in, keep track of new/updated content that you choose, see the activity of members you choose to follow, etc. All the possible activity across GDU will be in one centralised location so you don’t miss out on anything. Value in your account Your GDU account should be valuable and worth something. This is the point behind the points system and an awards system. Effective collaboration and hosting of games The games section is for you to upload your games for the visitors to download and play – think of it as your own website for your game. You will have a large range of options to customize your games pages and attract visitors to download it. On top of that, you will be able to add ‘team members’ to your game to have access to your own control panel. The control panel is a collaboration/team management system that is used to develop your team project online with other members of the community, rather than through PMs or topics posts. This system will also include a recruitment system which will available publically so you can attract members to your team.

That is very disappointing... I do take responsibility for all the broken down stuff. The performance stuff (speed, mysql losing its connection) I don't have control over. Instead I have been preparing to move the site over to gdunlimited.net but as usual there's very little time to do that. But the time is quickly approaching and when it does, I will make up for the mess I created here and take care of any errors, bugs, etc. that need fixed.
