The current status of GDU The time is approaching for the stage where we can get some testers to start using GDU in preparation for a soft launch. After designing and integrating a user interface set, and ironing out a few bugs, the site should be ready for some volunteer testers to get in and start reporting bugs. When we start redirecting the rmxpunlimited.net domain gdunlimited.net will depend on what the testers find and what needs to be done for the site to safely go live. Why it is taking so long The original design for GDU was actually done back in 2010 in December (in fact I have a screenshot from the 6th of December 2010) and has been evolving ever since. That includes a bit of a design upgrade from the live site over at gdunlimited.net which was originally going to be the final design. The change was due to branding reasons and also flexibility such as keeping in mind the need for mobile design. GDU is a unique system that uses the IPB forum system as a base (this allows us to keep all members, posts, etc.) and simply clips onto that the system to run its own. A massive issue is that to keep up to date all the IPB files need to be overwritten and all the custom html redone for EVERY upgrade. To maintain a perfectly integrated system then is very difficult and it takes time to set it up so that upgrades can be completed in a timely fashion without destroying anything. I'm also a pretty busy person. :) What to expect when it goes live GDU will have all the same accounts, posts, topics, etc. that RMXPU has. It is important to note that when GDU goes live there is not going to be a lot of change in functionality. There shouldn't be too much difference. I had moved most of the content on our joomla website into forum topics, so when GDU goes live it should have pretty much everything RMXPU has, and not a lot more apart from a new design. It will not in any way reflect our mission statement. This is essentially the long term goals. The amount of time taken to get to this stage is not representative of the time it will take to develop the unique parts of GDU that fulfill the mission statement. So far its all been about preparing the system and getting it ready for development. After this soft launch we will start developing GDU further based on priority. Our top priority is the games section, followed by community based sections like the new profiles, settings and dashboard. Why go live so early? Everyone must be tired of me talking about it by now :P Once the forums are functional it should be safe to make the switch. Then we can start getting more feedback and what we need to work on in terms of the existing sections. Starting to get recognition in terms of color scheme, logo's, design and the new name, are further reasons. There is also the issue of email's sent by the forum which have stopped working at the start of this year, those are tested and working on GDU. And finally once we get traffic into GDU we can start regaining traction on search engines and develop SEO after we have some data. The RMXPU menus and page flow are a real mess at the moment and it will be good to switch to an easier system and finally say goodbye to rmxpu after more than 5 years.

The thing is though that Kiriashi was a pretty big part of RMXPU and the site owes him a lot because he did so much for the site in terms of helping people, sparking activity and moderation. He was the admin here along with Polraudio while I was busy. So what you wouldn't know since you're new is that Kiriashi helped out a lot members, he talked to everyone a lot including on IM, and the possibility that he would deceive everyone like that is something none of us want to believe, but it seems so obvious from your objective point of view. If you were to look at all the evidence and weight it up, it does fall heavily to one side

Just performed cosmetic surgeory on GDU: replaced the css grid system with a new, more flexiable grid system that hopefully will help in creating a responsive design (which means GDU on ipads, tablets, and phones)

I skimmed so sorry if I missed some points. That's all fun and games, and of course its a bullshit excuse, but its a legitimate fact of causation. There is an increased risk with it, that's just common sense. That's all I'm saying. The weight that it carries in the reasoning for legislation is a matter of opinion and I was merely proposing the idea and not giving my opinion on it :P . Either way, the law wouldn't take it account and the person should be held fully reasonable for his actions (depending on your jurisdiction, I guess). Which is why he did it: causation. Thus make it illegal to deter the act. But its illegal for other reasons, this example is completely different from the rape porn situation so no argument there. This is a great of example of what I'm talking about. I'm free, you're Canadian so you're probably free. If you really want your freedom to be compromised, try being a woman in saudi arabia. Firstly, I don't want to walk outside naked lol its winter. If I did though, I could because I can do that on my property. This is not a lack of freedom, there are solid policy issues for making this a crime. I would not want genitals of adults exposed to my children in a public place. Do you?.... This is what you have to understand about "free will". Humans are animals, and civil societies cannot exist without drawing a line in the sand on what we can and cannot do. If we had full freedom, we'd return to being animals; kill each other, steal from each other, etc. Therefore, human societies need to be deprived of freedoms. Maybe your perception of your own free will Canada is different. I certainly have perceptions of the US citizens freedoms (or lack of) with their terrorist legislation (among others). But I walk around my country with the perception that I am fully free to do what I want and enjoy a civilized society. You may think you should have the right to do certain things. Think about the lowest people (as in bad people) in our societies and how they may take advantage of these things. We need to legislate to protect all members of our society and accommodate for the lowest common denominator. Lastly, as someone who's studied a bit of law (including your jurisdiction) there's a lot of policy reasons you need to consider before stating the law has no place if matters that don't involve safety. Like a lot. Matters of principle and practicality too.

Oh I missed that in your last post. That's the line you draw. It should be illegal to go beyond the line the courts deem to be in the best interests of society. I think you misunderstand what I mean by the best interests of society. I'm talking about criminal acts. What does society deem undesirable conduct. That should be forced on peope. For example, don't kill people. If this isn't forced on people, then people get murdered a lot. What do you even mean by free will? Is law against free will? I find the concept too Americanized. I'm free to do what I want, so...

Are there any males here that haven't? We've all seen stuff, doesn't necessary mean I went look for it. There is an interesting English case called R v Brown where the court had to decide whether or not people could do harm to each other voluntarily. This was a sexual thing where they tortured each other I think, I didn't read the case. But here's an argument: if grievous bodily harm is a crime, would should someone get away with it just because the other person consented? Are you allowed to kill someone if they wanted you to? I guess there's a line that needs to be drawn. In my opinion, two consenting adults cannot do whatever they want to each and other and its in the best interests of society that a line be drawn. The world is full of impressionable and stupid people.

I see 2 flaws with this logic: first of all the killing is completely fake, everyone knows its fake, often its unrealistic, and generally (but not always) its not so gruesome. But with rape porn where actual sex and penetration occurs, the only then that is different is a mental state: the women is consenting and pretending she is not, and you cannot tell. No doubt there is actual video of women being raped. That's a difference, but I don't think it matters anyway because most people will know its fake. And the second flaw is that just because the government has one thing wrong, doesn't mean they should make another. ...And one thing leads to another. Has anyone considered that rape porn is creating a greater risk of actual rape in the community? Also bestiality porn is already illegal (at least here) because the animal can't consent and thus its rape. Also anime porn, yawn.

The hall of fame used a bridge which connected IPB to Joomla and allowed members of IPB (the forum) to see what their position among a bunch of forum stats. In anticipation of releasing the new site a lot earlier I broke the integration and therefore all the components that used it (which is all the custom components I made for the site) no longer work. I broke the integration to 1.speed up the site and 2. because the joomla site will deleted upon launch of the new site.

Thanks for your input guys I'm pretty sure she went with the vaio and she read these posts. Also while we're sorta on the subject, do you guys know any tips about keeping you battery good? I'm not too sure what you mean there Pol. Assuming your battery DOESNT dip below 20% each month, then make sure it does so, then charge it back up to 100% uninterrupted? Mine is always dipping under. I really want to keep my battery good coz my laptop just turned 1 year old and thanks to my uni's amazing scheduling foresight, I have 4-6 hours of lectures in a row. Also what are the effects of putting it to sleep overnight or for long periods? And what is the difference between sleep and hibernate? Thanks!

Its people like you who are the reason I never got into art. It's just not possible to be that good :P Really amazing stuff.

Sounds good. Just make sure you have control of your markup (that is the HTML) or that it complies with standards. Especially if you're serious enough to invest money into it. Wordpress is a safe bet on first impression.

How exactly are you going to make money? Ads? Let me tell you something about ads... For 903,000 pageviews RMXPU made $128.54 (I think that's NZD which should be just over 100USD). And that's since before 2010. Why don't I just work like 5 hours instead of waiting 2 years? You see, ad revenue is only for the very popular. Even then the cost of hosting probably outweighs ad revenue. Obviously ads here are very selective, guests only in specific content areas. And in case anyone is wondering, I've got that money waiting for reinvestment. I agree Broken Messiah. If you're going to start a website you should learn how they work. Look at the source code of your site, its absolute gibberish and that's relevant to search engines. You want your site designed for humans but readable by search engines at the same time. If you compare to Broken Messiah's site, he has html5 markup, h1 tags etc. I'm too lazy to find any other issues but I'll just let you know that your site is very unfriendly for search engines. At least in my unprofessional knowledge of SEO. The FIRST thing I'd do if I was to make a website was to make a relevant tag. Next would be the pagetitle (and yours contains wix.com, which searchers don't want to see and that will be there on google if you site shows up). One last thing I noticed, do you know if you're getting a sitemap generated? I found broken's one easily enough: http://brokenmessiah...com/sitemap.xml Just another SEO thing. As a potential visitor to your site, I've never heard of wix but wordpress is well known and trustworthy. If you're going to use a subdomain and free hosting, perceptions are important too. One last thing I noticed. I think your site loads all of the content at once (so it can be found by search engines), but if I'm googlebot I'm thinking its all one page and without h1 tags, your individual pages won't be found (but of course not, the URL never changes). Its like giving up search engine optimization for user experience, but for me its making the experience worse because personally I don't like fading in and out between pages (unless, for example, its grouped content like rmxpu's current profiles). It also makes visitors feel lost, especially if you've got a lot of content and various levels (ie home -> scripts -> rmxp -> marks amazing script) so then you've got no breadcrumbs. You need breadcrumbs if you're going to have a lot of content. But I don't think you are? I suppose this is only relevant if you plan to use search engines as a source of traffic, which is a good idea. Even if you're a master of free marketing, optimizing for search engines gives you additional traffic, and if you don't do it, then someone googler is missing out on your potentially quality content, and you're also missing out on traffic. No one benefits. It's like marriage with your stalker.

Hi guys, So as it turns out, I'm not much of a computer person, and therefore I'm not sure which of these 2 laptops I should chose (in fact its for a friend): http://www.sony.co.nz/product/sve15117fg http://www.mytoshiba.co.nz/products/computers/satellite/l850d/pskeca-003002/specifications#details When I look at this, all I understand is CPU speed (I take it the minimum shown is the out of the box speed), the harddrive size, and the memory. What else do you really look for in a laptop? I suppose it depends on what you're using it for, in this case just general usage (its a female so 99% facebook) and uni (so need a good battery).

GDU Chatroom Opened - Bug reports needed
Marked replied to Marked's topic in Feedback, Bug Report and Forum Help
Is he still negative towards everything? :P Hmm well today I found a new chat! Just the very base, which I think I can build into a much more stable chat system. It's pretty low priority though, unless you guys really need it. -
Pretty much, the switch over is a flick of the switch. I suppose its like an upgrade. It's more like removing all the clutter and content disorganization that comes with the current joomla cms website. The important difference is that it combines seamless member account and design integration into a single package. This allows for our goals which you will find in a previous announcment.

GDU Chatroom Opened - Bug reports needed
Marked replied to Marked's topic in Feedback, Bug Report and Forum Help
Yeah, im sorry about that. I need to look into chrome and web sockets, because I really want to use real time notifications on gdu. It will be another step a head of competition websites, but not if the majority can't use it. -
For all of our irregular members, if you want to be notified of when Game Dev Unlimited goes live we have set up a mailing list where you will get an email sent to you. The subscription form is on the homepage of GDU: http://www.gdunlimited.net/ All regular members here and subscribers on facebook and twitter will obviously get the message there. Speaking of facebook, just did a little redesigning of the coverphoto: http://www.facebook.com/gamedevunlimited

In 1987 New Zealand enacted law so nuclear US ships could not enter our waters. There have been turmoil in the relationship of both counties because of it for years, with the US labeling us friends and not allies despite our contributions to many wars, and it's still going today as the US blocks NZ ships from entering Pear Harbor: http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/7208276/Kiwi-ships-kept-out-of-Pearl-Harbour Going against all advice and putting principle above consequences, the Prime Minister of NZ at the time (David Lange) debated the position of NZ. Here are a few extracts from the transcript: So the point of discussion is this: Should we (counties around the world) hold nuclear weapons? Do you agree or disagree with Lange's points?

I think I can use a 3rd party thing for the mailing list so shouldn't be too hard. That question is asked a lot. GDU is RMXPU. GDU is a new design and a new system with integrates perfectly with the forums allowing for seamless expansion. The 2 use the same database so that when we switch over there won't be any downtime. Everyone could use GDU right now if I altered the permissions, but it's not ready. For example (Note: the following image is slightly different from the GDU that will go live):

Welcome back! I think you're missing a points 4-8 in your list :P I remember you. I remember you're the brother of someone but I just can't remember who... Was it.. Nisage?

Why do you keep leaving!? I'll let you test GDU.....
