Create a small game in a week.
Marked replied to Broken Messiah's topic in Community Contests & Events
No you wouldn't. The contest is not about winning something. If the competition kicks off with at least 2 participants then the usual awards for contests will be given. -
Yep, but the next part up for development is the games section. It'll be a special section with integration of project management for teams and production company's. The profiles you're talking about are only really going to come if the site's activity picks up. Old member's like you choosing to remain here rather than certain other RM sites would help. I'm not going to waste my time on unused systems that take so long to develop. Profiles would be good though, I want to create a profile that is like a game dev's resume or portfolio. Possibly even something to to put on your actual resume. We're also the most advanced RM site in my opinion. If all goes to plan, we'll blow the others out of the water in that category.

You're keen to get going aren't you? :P We could wait till you get a few more participants first? Hopefully a bit longer will give time to get more people doing it. -
Create a small game in a week.
Marked replied to Broken Messiah's topic in Community Contests & Events
I think there should be a start date. People are going to read this, look at the post date, and think the contest is almost up. Looks like there might be 3 contestants, so might be a good to collect participates and set the best start date, then let it run. If you like, I can advertise it on the site (but I'd insist on headings in the OP :P). History suggests a month is too long, members forget, put it off too long. I think the pressure of a week is much more motivating. -
Lol poor form Broken :P Next time.

You can spot a true web developer but how ugly his website's design is
-
Correct on the second the part Bob, I'm a hobbyist :D But I'm actually a terrible designer. If a site looks awesome then either 1. they didn't design it; or 2. they're not true web developers. Web dev's make the site work and ultimately define how various URL's output various HTML, web designers simply apply styles to that HTML. Sadly I gotta both on this site :P

Invisionfree. But it's not so good for the future if you want to upgrade the software (but you probably won't). It'll cost you $30 to get the database out (last time I checked, in 2006) but you can easily just set it up with your own domain name. You may have to pay extra do remove their adsense ads.

A few great entries so far. It's not too late to enter! ;)

Again you're missing the scope of my argument :P I believe I addressed this above in my post, but I see where I made my mistake: take away hollywood and what do you have. That's the last thing I said and you got me there, I actually take that back. The quote I have above is pretty much based on that, therefore: This argument is pretty much the same as the previous poster. My counter argument is simple, Hollywood is still a promoter. You take away hollywood and you still have it, yes, but less of it. Hollywood is a contributor, and in my opinion a big one because it covers a whole range of things. When you counter argue that, it's important to take that scope into account. Getting to Columbine is going right out of what I'm talking about, but doesn't exclude violence. What I said at the end unfortunately inferred that, but from my this post I'm saying that 1. it is a reason why (not the reason why) and 2. I do doubt that you can place blame on media for such an extreme event, I am saying we should place blame on them for promoting and gradually and accumulatively influencing undesirable social attitudes toward such things as smoking, drug use and sexualisation. Put it this way. Do you want your daughter losing her virginity at 12? Parents will try as the might to raise their daughters properly and you no doubt will say its on them or the individual, but its hard to deny the influences of media on them either directly or indirectly via their social group (which is the big one). At the end of the day we're like our generation, not like our parents, and media reaches as all approximately equally so if we're not exposed to it directly, it will get to us from our social groups.
-
Two things. Firstly, the influence is slow and accumulative. "Within our society" is very broad. Let me put this example to you. Smoking is in our society, so lets blatantly advertise it. The result is that more people will do it. That's the key. It's not about lying to ourselves, its about promoting undesirable behavior. The tricky part to this argument is believing that it influences people because chances are it doesn't influence you (refer below). In a movie = promotion = influence. For me, this is the key to the discussion. It may not influence you, or any of us here, but it does influence. There are teenage girls around the world making suicide pacts. They kill themselves because their friends did it, oh how trendy. As a general rule to protect our society must set the general rule to being that people are stupid. They will do stupid things. Young people are extremely impressionable, you can get them to jump off a cliff. Therefore censorship is imperative, hollywood is to blame (but to make you happy, to blame in a non-legal sense). But for hollywood, this influence would not exist.

I'm gona add a place for members to submit quotes later on, but will require approval. I'll add the new ones in once I get some free time. It's exam season.
-
I agree, but just because it is in our nature, in my opinion, isn't a valid reason. Of course we are like that. Without laws and society will become uncivilized animals, right? Smoking was considered healthy back then and it is becoming more and more unpopular, now cinema is being used to try and stop that (more like TV series). Hollywood has sexualised a generation, despite it being inherent in our nature, etc. It's popular because we want to see it, right? Well censorship is the answer to stopping that if that's what we want to stop. It may be our fault, but consider the position without hollywood. That is why it is to blame.

New name for "Likes" - suggestions
Marked replied to Marked's topic in Feedback, Bug Report and Forum Help
I think you're off the mark a little bit. Each like will attract points, the likes are not the points. I'm leaning towards +1, although not in a final way since that's google's thing. We need something unique. Things like "thanks" and "appreciations" probably arn't appropriate. You can like something without ever having a use for it, so, "like" and "+1" are good fits for the purpose of the system, but I'd prefer something unique. What about "hearts"? -
RMU 2.0 Live Bug Report Topic
Marked replied to ShinGamix's topic in Feedback, Bug Report and Forum Help
Only? :dizzy: Thanks Crimson, I never noticed the More Reply Options being broken. I think I can fix these but I'll have to put it on my todo list that I have exams and work over the next for weeks :( Could you explain how the notifications aren't working? At first I thought they weren't either. However, I think that you have to go into the notified content to permanently clear it. You see this is all the forum's system in terms of setting up the notification system, but the display is 100% my code (obviously the notifications are global) so it's been tricky getting it right. -
Ah that's a familiar username :) Welcome back  . The site has been going through construction constantly since last September, but hopefully now we've got a settled design, and I plan to introduce a whole bunch of sections for game development here.

I disagree dolarmak. I'm just gona say this real quick coz I'm supposed to be studying. Media influences people. The exceptionally sensitive people will go out and replicate the act, the average person will influenced on some level. I'm not really talking about violence at all. I'm really talking about how hollywood and movies are creating a sexualized society. My point is that media is a huge influencing factor, though only to a realistic level, such as drinking and smoking is cool in movies, so I'll do that. Sex is a primal thing, whether in movies or games, I think it will influence. Espicially kids today with smartphones, seeing stuff in games can lead to some curious google searches. Probably doesn't apply to games so much. I don't think a game really needs hardcore sex scenes. I see stuff like that as an indicator of low quality because they're resorting to that to get attention. If I want to see sex I'll use my browser, that's where it should stay. Games should stick to the storyline and keep it classy. You can show a quick sex scene or get your point across without being graphical about it. Otherwise you're kidding yourself, it's a treat for the player. It's not needed. Censor dat.

RMU 2.0 Live Bug Report Topic
Marked replied to ShinGamix's topic in Feedback, Bug Report and Forum Help
That catches everyone: when you click the button, some JS makes the count disappear whether or not that count is cleared in the database. However, I've considerably updated the code. I have rewired the notifications so it works completely differently than previously. The count anyway. I'm really really hoping it's functioning for everyone that way it should. Now, the count is a number stored in the DB by the forums, so its safe to assume that whatever the count says, its accurate. The little red circle will only disappear after the count has been reset to 0. Before it was easy to interrupt the clearing of the count by immediately exiting the page. That's still possible, however the clearing operates far quicker than before. So, hopefully we're good. Let me know. @Shin: Ahh the old Franklin problem (well, one of them :P ). All fixed. You may have to refresh your browser to see the CSS changes. Usually I clear all cached CSS and JS if the changes are major. Great work guys, keep 'em coming :D I'm having a bug-fixing day. My finals are only 12 days away. So far. -
You thought that was a minor bug? :P Pretty disastrous. Strangely I'm not getting it, but I know to how to fix it anyway. I'm slowly making the transition from firefox to chrome.. I just can't stand Chrome's text rendering but I guess I'll forget about firefox's beauty eventually :( EDIT: *facepalm* it was my own stupid mistake that was causing the issue, I couldn't see it logged in. To make my own customizations I gotta mess with pretty messy code because of all the if statements use to accommodate moderators, so unsurprisingly I made a few mistakes. I did all the forum stuff in a day, thus the "rushed" in the topic title. Thanks for calling that out, I may have never found it on my own

Cheaper?? @Broken, yeah, personally I wouldn't trust 'em either but the above is technically not one of those, this is a promotion for what are normally usual priced domains. I did see some complaints about this site though, so fair warning. I posted this for this considering a site, nothing really to loose and a cheap option to get started. Personally I'm with xisto domains, who are the same company who used to offer a great hosting service if you posted on their forums. All that down time :P

Lol guys, the staff + legends have been discussing whether to switch back to GDU. The majority of us have voted in favor of remaining RMU. It's a democracy. For now. Personally I would prefer a switch back to GDU (which obviously is a mere switch logo and page titles) because it sounds better, matches the domain name and I want to use Chief's logo. Chief, can you make the same logo for RMU? The whole banner being nearly 1/2 of my laptop thing is a bit unprofessional. I should hope so. As I recall it was your PM in 2011 that led me uncovering the secret component that makes the integration system work  We've got tons of custom stuff here now that can be expanded at any time. I'm particularly proud of my tutorial editor system which I spent a month creating. I think I said this somewhere else but what we're missing currently is the custom feedback sections: you can come here and without anyone noticing you can utilize our content sections, but there's no special place for getting feedback on your work. I think that's the next step. Everything is an option :) Are you referring to this? If not, or you see something different, point me in the right direction and I'll get it fixed up. I actually saw some crazy spacing yesterday on Chrome in the topic listing view, but I fixed it up then. Well, I'm glad you guys like the new look. The previous design killed all of my motivation to develop the site further. You would look at it and think, this isn't a design for a site with our goals. Hopefully we're on the right track, I hate designing and I want to keep a design for more than 3 months at time :P If you guys want I can look at some color variations. Also, good to see some old members stopping by :)
