No problem, after all why would you touch something if you don't know what it does. Besides I really think the default option should be saving the characters' progress, not restarting them every time you add them to the party. You might want to use the question mark in the top right corner of the window, then when you click on something it gives you a small hint as to what it does. By the way, you really didn't need to double post.

2 more bugs.... i think
Saltome replied to albertibay's topic in Feedback, Bug Report and Forum Help
Lol... I like how he went and reported MY bug. -
Yes you could point to other sites, but that's not very professional, and quite honestly makes my spine crawl.

When you are adding the character you can see a small check box that says "Initialize". You should uncheck that.

I see a red circle number by the chat tab!
Saltome replied to ShinGamix's topic in Feedback, Bug Report and Forum Help
Well its encouraging to see that there are people in the chat, but it also discourages people from joining when its empty. I find myself lurking in the chat just to encourage people not to avoid it. -
Hmm, I'd say no to this idea, I have a couple of lets players on youtube that keep me up to date on gaming news, I wouldn't bother reading a forum when I can just listen to it. A gaming news vlog, now that's a more plausible idea. However there are certain disadvantages to it, like being too linear. So it would be best to do both, a team to keep an up to date news database, and a team of vloggers to cover the different news categories, ultimately speaking. For starters, you should make a recruitment post to attract people for the news section and vlogging. If people are interested you can make the forum section.

Well, you can probably use Asian symbols by using an Asian font. But it will still be written left to right, you can't change that unless you change the code for how the message is displayed. There might be some scripts out there that can display text in different directions, but I'm not sure.

Enterbrain is becoming very unprofessional
Saltome replied to FranklinX's topic in Engine Discussion
Hmm, so from what I'm gathering the problem is that you can't access the trial, since it doesn't seem to happen to everyone, I assume it only happens when the trial for rpg maker xp runs out because they use common variables between the two versions. Some incompatibility, bugs or even bad design can also explain the missing buttons. Even though, I should be telling this to Enterbrain, I just wanted to shed some light on what may be causing it. -
Windows xp sp2-ish AMD Sempron 3200+ 1.8ghz NVIDIA GeForce 7050 RAM 960MB Could be, but I really can't complain of incompatibility issues.

I can't really, but it's the windows default crash client, so it doesn't really provide much information. I can tell you when the crashes happened. For the most part they happened when changing scenes, when i approached the two agents in the alley, when entering the room with the locker after disabling the security system, when i clicked yes to saving after the battle with Yun and in the beginning of the next level when it's supposed to display your objective. Oddly enough each of them only occurred once.

Well It isn't a bad game, it's badass. But there are a couple of unsolvable situations, and minor bugs. But what irritated me the most were frequent random crashes.

I dunno about this, I don't think there's anything wrong with the rpg maker script editor ;/ except for the lack of search functionality. But I guess it can be useful.
-
Ever heard the word foolproof? If a child doesn't like it you are probably doing something wrong. And I can't say i like it either, it's a very peculiar art style, it looks cheap and random. But well, that's no reason to stop, every train has passengers. Every game you make will be better than the last one.

Need some help developing a game idea
Saltome replied to railfan101's topic in General Game Development
Yeah not every game needs a scripter, but this is a survival game, at the very least you are gonna need to script survival needs or periodical events incorporated into a time system. And I don't know why you think a script would delay anything, if you know what you are doing, making scripts doesn't take long. -
Need some help developing a game idea
Saltome replied to railfan101's topic in General Game Development
Well I'm interested, but you need a capable and dedicated team for that sort of game. If you can get one together, I'll come along. I think Shin can help you to find mappers and artists, if he decides to join. I can help with design, management, writing, debugging, database, events and scripting, pretty much in that order. Would be nice to find a composer, but it's not absolutely critical. And you need to find a skilled scripter, without one this won't go far. And I mean skilled, because this would be a script heavy project. -
Nope, the chat is empty, end of the line. I used to lurk over there, nothing for days on end.

Hmm, personally I think a story is just flavor for a game, but I guess that's not the case with story based games. I don't know why you want to change your antagonist if it's going to change the plot around completely, but I don't mind giving you a shoulder. Just keep in mind I'd be going into this blindly, so you will have to lead me into the story.

Monster Collapsing Effect Change
Saltome replied to Darkness's topic in Archived RPG Maker XP Scripts (RGSS1)
Well a suggestion I can give, having different effects depending on the weapon that kills the enemy. Like with slashing weapons the enemy sprite splits down the middle, with crushing weapons you squish the sprite on the y axis. with piercing weapons you push the sprite back and tilt it down on the -x axis, with explosives the enemy instantly vanishes, maybe show a smoke animation or turn it into a sprite of a small crater on the battlefield. Though this somewhat borders with showing a different animation depending on the hit you take, rather than simply the way you fade the sprite. -
I certainly like the idea, thought Mark might object to people taking his site and making a game out of it :P And I've been itching to actually get involved in a project with the community. About the platform, I don't particularly like browser games, browsers just aren't made for games ;/ Though there was a time when I used to play them they just don't have the same capability, and I do have a Gaia account, but I really never understood the fascination with it. A better alternative is a flash game, but I do have my reserves about flash, its just too clunky and laggy for me. That's why I'd suggest a small server-client online game for the community, with a classic rpg look, written in c++ or maybe Ruby(at least that's what languages I can help with). And the game itself, I suggest somewhat of a combat manager, the user will have an avatar that trains its combat skills and you can use it to roam the world, challenging other users to fights, or taking part in tournaments with prizes, the combat would be classic turn based. I can take this idea further, but this should be enough for a start.

Listen, I am sorry for being so harsh with you. But you are gravely misjudging the situation. Time and time again we are trying to make you understand , that all we want to do is help you. We won't assault you, we won't steal your idea, but you just refuse to listen. And I won't chase after you.

Well I don't think I found what I was looking for, but it sure was a nice trek trough the history of gdu. Here are some things that caught my eye. Hmm, hackers eh? And an advertising team? A design contest? Sigh, where the hell was I? A doogle eh? :} Formated your project files eh? Sure is disappointing, got a project corrupt once, still haven't tried to start it over.

Hmm, sorry to bring this up 4 years after the topic died out, but I wanna give my opinion. (your fault for making that treasure hunt Mark :D(even though this is outside the range of the date search...)) In general premade materials are a bad idea, there are just too many possible variables, there are countless possibilities and its much simpler to just make a generator, that is... unless you are talking about maps. A map generation is a thorny topic, a map generator is very complicated compared to a character generator for example, and will resemble an advanced map making tool rather than a generator. Even though, I fancy good generation software, maybe we should make some. I can see it right now, a program that lets you easily create materials for your game, it would be the bane of artists abroad <3 An online database, for building blocks that you use to make characters, maps even stories. A tool that lets you easily put these pieces together, in a instinctive and simplified way.

I don't think there should be a theme, It will reduce the variety of the entries. ...being attacked? Let me go get my big bad bazooka... I would be against such a rule x) I made the game in advance but it was made in under a month, so doesn't actually defy any of the rules of the contest, as they are right now. Well, the common element is a nice idea, though if you want to cheat you will find a way to do it, all it takes are a couple of tweaks. But I think that since the participants are from the forum, we can assume that they will abide by the rules.

I say lack of confidence because this isn't the first time you are doubting the purpose of the forum. Things may look bad to you, but this is the biggest forum I have ever been active in, an average of 100 guests is nothing to sneeze at. And being rational isn't all that its cut out to be. I've been wanting to make a virtual world for years, long before Minecraft and all the "survival" games existed. But I don't have the resources to make it, and i never will if i don't start working on it alone ;/ But yeah, Chief is right, forums are a dying breed. Can't say its in favor of social sites, they don't really offer anything. In my opinion online games is where all the attention is going to. Forums and social sites benefit strictly business relationships, most people would prefer chatting with their friends while playing their games, hence the popularity of Xfire and Gamespy, the problem with those is that they focus on games that weren't intended for online play. It's just no point being an active member of a website unless you are there to do business, with that in mind a website would only be useful if it somehow eases your work. Promptly put, for a website to be self sustained it has to offer a premium service of some sort, adds wouldn't cut it. As far as communication goes, its enough to have a chat box, to humor yourself while managing your business. And forums, nope forget it. forums are a thing of the past, there just aren't enough people to go around to be able to support the the existence of quality forums, which will only hasten the forum's demise. I guess with that in mind web hosts and domain sellers should reduce their price if they want to keep forums alive, but I digress. If you want to make a place where people will spend a lot of time, you have to entertain them. That should be your first priority, as long as it entertains them they will stick around waiting for more to come out, giving you time to do other things. It's not enough for it to be useful and polished it has to be fun. That's why games are so successful. I wonder, why a website? Make an independent program that will offer all the things gdu does. Log in, check your progress, make changes, chat around and log out. Bottom line is, as a forum GDU is great, but forums are at a decline, and so will GDU until it's ready to offer something more.
